About this role
Job summary
This is a new substantive consultant post to join eleven other consultants in delivering cardiology services to the paediatric population of the West Midlands. The Cardiac unit at the Birmingham Children's Hospital is an established centre of excellence and also acts as a supra-regional and international referral centre for cardiology and cardiac surgery. The post is designed to reduce the overall commitments of the current consultant body by redistribution of existing workload, in particular the delivery of non-invasive services provided by the department.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in the management of the current cardiac patient population and will be expected to develop specialised areas of interest to complement the clinical practice of the existing consultants.
Applicants must be registered with full GMC and must be eligible to practice in the UK. It would be preferable that they have completed Higher Specialist Training in Paediatric Cardiology and be eligible to be on the Specialist Register to have their CCT or be expecting their CCT within 6 months of advertising the post.
Main duties of the job
This position has been created to support the existing interventional cardiology team. The post holder will work in cooperation with the present consultants to provide a strong consultant presence in clinical areas which in turn will reduce the clinical workload of junior and middle grade medical staff and thereby improve the training. The post is suitable for a new or early career interventional paediatric cardiologist with a view to working with an experienced interventional team.
The successful candidate will take part in the existing on-call structure and be a part of the invasive on-call team. The current working pattern is 1 in 11 on service weeks, with the on-service consultant covering Monday-Thursday, and the following weekend. The interventional cardiology team provides interventional on call cover during on call by a non-invasive cardiologist (1:4).
There is a flexible approach to sharing facilities for when not on service.
There are regular outreach clinics throughout the region of which the post holder will be expected to support.
