A little more about your role…
Join our Bridges team in Gloucester at an exciting time as we embark on the early stages of WSP’s long-term professional services partnership with Gloucestershire County Council (GCC).
This is a unique opportunity to work closely with GCC in the management, maintenance and improvement of its bridges and highway structures, helping ensure these important assets remain safe, serviceable and fit for the future.
Working side-by-side with GCC officers within their offices, you’ll become an integral part of the client team. Rather than operating solely as an external consultant, you’ll build strong working relationships with the people responsible for Gloucestershire’s structures portfolio and contribute directly to decisions around inspection, assessment, maintenance, repair, strengthening and improvement works.
You’ll join an established team with extensive knowledge of the varied structures across the county, while also having access to specialist expertise and additional resources from WSP’s wider structures community.
It is an especially exciting time to join. GCC is investing significantly in its structures programme, providing an extensive and varied pipeline of work focused on protecting, maintaining and improving existing bridge and structural assets.
As a Senior Engineer, you’ll play an important role in developing and delivering this programme. Your work could involve identifying maintenance requirements, supporting structural inspections and assessments, developing repair and strengthening solutions, and helping prioritise interventions to maximise the performance and longevity of assets.
While there will be opportunities to contribute to design, this is not a solely design-focused role. It offers the chance to become involved across the lifecycle of bridges and structures, combining technical engineering knowledge with practical asset management, maintenance and client-facing responsibilities.
Gloucestershire also has an ambitious programme of major transport projects designed to improve the network and support the county’s economy. This provides additional opportunities to contribute to the development, design and delivery of significant new structures alongside the core maintenance and improvement programme.
What we’ll be looking for you to demonstrate
- A passion for bridges and structures engineering and for delivering projects that make a tangible difference to local communities.
- Experience working with existing bridge, highway or civil engineering structures, ideally encompassing areas such as inspection, assessment, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation or strengthening.
- An understanding of how inspection and assessment information can be used to inform maintenance priorities and engineering interventions.
- A strong and mature approach to Health & Safety, with good knowledge of relevant legislation and the ability to promote high standards across projects, colleagues and clients.
- Confidence communicating with clients, stakeholders and technical colleagues, with the ability to explain engineering issues clearly and contribute constructively to decision-making.
- A Civil Engineering degree or equivalent relevant qualification.
- Progress towards an appropriate professional engineering qualification. Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status would be highly regarded, as would relevant Structures experience within a local government/maintenance style contract.
Don’t quite meet all the criteria? Apply, and we can see how your experience aligns to this role and other opportunities within the team.
