About this role
RaceTrac Company Overview
Job Description
The Motor Fuels Tax Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operational execution of RaceTrac’s motor fuels tax function. This role oversees a high-volume, data-intensive, multi-jurisdictional compliance environment supporting retail, wholesale, and fuel supply operations across multiple entities and jurisdictions. The ideal candidate brings exceptional discipline in managing large volumes of data, recurring deliverables, and competing deadlines while maintaining the curiosity and critical review mindset needed to identify potential errors, inconsistencies, and process gaps as the organization continues to grow and operations evolve.
The Manager serves as a motor fuels tax technical advisor and people leader, responsible for recurring compliance, notices, audit coordination, tax accounting, licensing administration, work product review, and service-provider coordination. Given the volume and complexity of the function, success requires disciplined prioritization, thoughtful delegation, strong workload management, and the ability to create repeatable review processes that help the team deliver accurate, complete, and well-supported work at scale.
The ideal candidate is a highly accountable, self-directed manager who develops people, creates structure, communicates clearly, reviews work critically, and is willing to dig into data, systems, and operational activity to understand root causes and prevent recurring issues. The role requires sound motor fuels tax knowledge with room to continue building technical depth through support from senior tax leadership and external specialists.
What You'll Do

- Evaluate and respond promptly to business requests for new transaction types, rule changes, and process updates; translate business facts into clear system and tax requirements. Lead the end-to-end implementation of rule and set-up changes, including requirements gathering, testing, validation, documentation, and post-implementation follow-up.
- Manage the accuracy, maintenance, and ongoing enhancement of motor fuel tax rules and transaction set-up within RightAngle and PDI.
- Manage implementation of rate changes, tax rules, and regulatory requirements, ensuring that they are accurately reflected in all applicable systems, processes, and documentation.
- Develop and document well-supported positions for new or changing transactions, including key assumptions, risks, alternatives, and recommended approaches.
- Coordinate with the Motor Fuel Tax Operations Manager to identify tax compliance requirements and ensure RightAngle and PDI configuration supports accurate reporting, filing, and audit-ready processes.
- Partner with the Accounting, ERP, billing and collection, and operational teams to ensure system changes integrate effectively across financial, billing, compliance, and business processes.
- Maintain clear documentation of RightAngle and PDI rules, transaction logic, decisions, and process changes to support consistency, training, compliance, and future scalability.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and system functionality that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and the ability to support a growing motor fuel business.
- Lead, coach, and develop one to two junior team members; provide direction, establish priorities, review work for accuracy and completeness, and build their technical and problem-solving skills.
- Drive assigned projects and recurring responsibilities to completion with strong organization, follow-through, sound judgment, and a proactive focus on adding value.
