The Team
The Tommy Jeans mission is to create collections that embody accessible lifestyle luxury, delivering products that surprise, engage and perform commercially while staying true to the brand – at all times we ensure alignment with the company's overarching growth drivers such as Win With Best Product and Win With Best Consumer Engagement. The Tommy Jeans team sits within the greater PVH campus based in Amsterdam. You and your team will be designing for the Tommy Jeans lifestyle brand, presenting four collections annually in partnership with Production, Sourcing Development, Buying, Planning and Merchandising Sales.
The Position
The Design Director, Tommy Jeans Women's Apparel plays a pivotal role in shaping the relevance, desirability and commercial success of the women's collection. Leading all non-denim ready-to-wear - jersey and sweats, knitwear, polos and rugby shirts, shirts and soft wovens, dresses and skirts, non-denim bottoms and outerwear - you will build a distinctive women's wardrobe around denim.
Working closely with the Vice President of Tommy Jeans Design, you will translate strategic vision into a clear women's product point of view. Combining deep womenswear expertise with exceptional taste and strength in colour, silhouette, proportion, fabric, fit and styling, you will evolve existing product, identify new opportunities and build recognizable icons and franchises. You will lead and develop the design team while remaining hands-on in product and collection building.
You will set and execute the seasonal fashion direction, ensuring the collection feels contemporary, culturally relevant and unmistakably Tommy Jeans. An instinctive understanding of the female consumer, global marketplace and cultural shifts will allow you to translate trends through the brand's American sportswear and 1990s heritage rather than simply follow them.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Seasonal Direction and Women's Product Vision: Collaborate with the Color and Concept team on seasonal themes, colour, graphics, print and pattern. Translate the direction set by the VP and Chief Design Officer into a compelling women's point of view across non-denim through mood boards, material concepts, outfitting and style outs. Continually edit the offer - what to elevate, simplify, evolve or introduce - to build a complete wardrobe around denim.
- Trend and Cultural Intelligence: Maintain a deep understanding of runway, culture, street style, vintage, contemporary brands and marketplace shifts. Identify emerging trends early and translate them through Tommy Jeans DNA rather than simply following the market. Partner with Merchandising to balance strong commercial foundations with directional product that creates relevance and future growth.
- Brand Authenticity, Icons and Franchises: Reinterpret Tommy Jeans' American heritage, prep, sportswear, collegiate and 1990s cultural codes in a modern, non-literal way. Create and evolve recognizable product icons and franchises that build long-term category authority without relying on novelty.
- Range Planning and Commercial Partnership: Partner with Merchandising on range architecture, pricing, margins and collection structure. Balance consumer desirability, design integrity and commercial objectives, using performance and marketplace insight to inform decisions while protecting the coherence of the collection.
- Colour, Silhouette, Material and Fit Direction: Drive a distinctive point of view on colour, silhouette, proportion, fit, styling and outfitting. Lead fabric, yarn, texture, wash, finish and construction direction to elevate perceived value and product differentiation, partnering with Production and Sourcing to deliver quality and commercial feasibility.
- Consumer, Market and Sales Insight: Maintain an obsessive understanding of the Tommy Jeans female consumer, competitors and global marketplace through stores, e-commerce, fashion research and travel. Translate relevant insights with Sales and key market partners into the collection and its presentation.
- Strategy, Synergy and Delivery: Translate the VP's design strategy into clear priorities and deliverables. Work closely with denim design and cross-functional partners to ensure cohesion across Tommy Jeans and a strong relationship between denim and lifestyle product, using relevant KPIs and process improvements to support creative and commercial goals.
- Team and Creative Leadership: Lead the design team with clear creative direction while remaining closely involved in product editing, fittings, prototypes and key design decisions. Manage priorities and deadlines, develop individual talent and foster a culture of curiosity, confidence, collaboration and sustainable high performance.
- This is a full time role based in Amsterdam and includes work travelling.
The Ideal Candidate
- Minimum 10 years' design management experience within global premium or accessible-premium apparel brands, with significant senior womenswear experience.
- Deep multi-category womenswear expertise and an instinctive understanding of the female consumer, with a proven track record of elevated and commercially successful collections.
- Exceptional taste and contemporary fashion instinct, with outstanding strength in colour, silhouette, proportion, fit, styling and outfitting.
- Deep knowledge of global fashion, runway, culture, street style, vintage and marketplace shifts, with the ability to identify emerging trends early and translate them into brand-right product.
- Strong ability to reinterpret brand heritage and design codes in a modern way. Experience in American sportswear, denim-led lifestyle or premium casualwear is highly advantageous.
- High-level knowledge of fabrics, yarns, construction, fit, washes, finishes, print and graphics, using material, texture and detail to elevate product.
- Hands-on creative leader, equally comfortable setting direction, designing and editing product, leading fittings and prototypes, and coaching designers. High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
- Strong strategic and commercial judgement, balancing creative ambition with range architecture, pricing, margin and consumer demand.
- Proven leader of high-performing design teams, able to manage priorities, timelines and senior stakeholders while creating clarity, accountability and a healthy collaborative culture.
- Excellent presentation, influencing and communication skills, with the confidence to articulate a clear creative point of view.
- Fluency in English, verbal and written.
