About this role

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join Slough Borough Council's Public Health and Public Protection Directorate as a Public Health Graduate Trainee, gaining hands-on experience across a broad range of public health programmes whilst working towards your UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) Practitioner registration.

Over the 2.5-year fixed-term contract (31 months), you will contribute to the delivery of public health priorities identified in the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy and Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA), develop your skills in health needs assessment, commissioning, data analysis, stakeholder engagement and project management, and work across key areas including health improvement, health protection, healthcare public health and the wider determinants of health.

Main duties of the job

Support the efficient development, delivery and monitoring of public health programmes and projects across Slough Borough Council.

Undertake the UK Public Health Registration Practitioner Development Scheme, gaining broad experience and skills within public health, with the aim of achieving registration within 31 months of appointment.

Work across defined projects to ensure delivery of the Public Health Outcomes Framework and the priorities identified in the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy and Joint Strategic Needs Assessment.

Provide support to the Public Health Leads, Public Health Consultants on key priorities, including the wider determinants of health agenda and partnership working across the Integrated Care System and the Voluntary and Community Sector.

Develop and apply skills in health needs assessment, data analysis, project management and stakeholder engagement to contribute to evidence-based public health practice.

Contribute to secondment opportunities with neighbouring organisations and public health system partners to ensure breadth of experience supporting UKPHR registration.

Service Accountabilities:

Support Public Health Consultants and their teams in the commissioning and delivery of public health programmes and projects as identified in the business plans, JSNA and Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. Develop skills in identifying health needs using appropriate analytical techniques and working with multiple qualitative and quantitative data sources. Contribute to the evaluation of the impact of public health programmes and projects using appropriate evaluation techniques, including monitoring performance against key indicators and outcome measures. Communicate complex public health information in an accessible and appropriate form to a range of audiences including health professionals, community partners, and decision-makers. Develop negotiation, facilitation, delegation and communication skills to engage key stakeholders and targeted communities effectively. Support the development and maintenance of the JSNA and contribute to regular reports and updates to relevant governance structures including the Health and Wellbeing Board. Disseminate learning from programmes and projects to relevant stakeholders. Develop the ability to work autonomously to provide defined public health advice to health professionals, individuals, community groups and key stakeholders. Undertake professional development activities arranged through the UKPHR Practitioner Development Scheme and required in-house training, conferences and workshops. Receive professional management and support from a relevant professional/Programme Manager. Commitment to the Council's Equal Opportunities policy and procedures at all times. Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Experience of analysing data and handling data sets Knowledge and understanding of public health issues, health inequalities and the priorities for residents across Slough Understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues Demonstrated understanding of public health functions Relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in public health or related discipline

Desirable

Experience of working across multi-professional and multi-agency partnerships Research or evaluation skills Demonstrated project management skills Knowledge and experience of local health and social care services relating to public health and the local geographic area Understanding of behavioural change theories relevant to promoting and improving public health and wellbeing

Experience Essential

Experience of analysing data and handling data sets Experience of working in project teams Experience in prioritising work, managing time and working under pressure to deliver to deadlines
