About this role

Job summary

This is ward-based role in a busy urology department based in Cheltenham General Hospital. We care for all aspects of emergency and elective urology, and as part of a large and supportive team, you will be caring for patients with a variety of emergency conditions including stone disease, haematuria, testicular pain and obstructed kidneys. Our elective service includes major urological surgery including cystectomy, prostatectomy and nephrectomy, and ureteroscopic procedures.Integral to the responsibilities of our posts are the following objectives:

Main duties of the job Timely attendance for daily ward rounds

Support our FY1 doctors Cover the ward work to allow the FY1s to attend fortnightly mandatory teaching sessions Under supervision from senior decision makers, arranging tests and facilitating discharges for our inpatients On call commitments include managing new emergency admissions within the wider urology team and participating in the urology on call rota Participate in a 1:8 night on-call rota, covering urology, and elective general surgery, gynae-oncology and orthopaedics Attendance at elective clinics and operating lists including adult and paediatric urology lists

About us

The Urology service in Gloucestershire is a large and busy department. The service is predominantly based at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH). Some outpatient clinics are offered in Cirencester, and paediatric surgery is performed in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Urological in-patient care is provided on a dedicated ward at Cheltenham General Hospital (Tivoli) and the department have their own specialised theatres.

Patients referred in with suspected urological cancer are seen within dedicated clinics. These include a one-stop haematuria clinic, where cystoscopy is performed following prior upper tract investigations, and a RAPID prostate cancer clinic which is CNS-supported.

We have two Intuitive daVinci robots (Xi dual console robot with TRUMPF table and X) . In addition we have state of the art Olympus and Storz urological equipmentfor transurethral/ureteroscopic surgery. A fixed site lithotripter has recently been funded. A dedicated urological outpatient facility is planned.

Qualifications Essential

MBChB/MBBS (or equivalent primary medical qualification) Eligibility to work in UK Full GMC registration

MRCS part A MRCS part B

Experience Essential

Previous urology experience at FY/SHO-grade level Experience of work in UK

Completion of UKFPO

Knowledge Essential

Experienced in ward-based skills eg cannulation, venepuncture, catheterisation Computer skills
