Job summary
This is a replacement post for the CAMHS Acute Admissions Service in Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The Hope Unit - 12 bed inpatient unit is based at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury. This provides an innovative and responsive Trust wide and Regional acute admissions service for adolescents from 13 years to age 18th birthday, with serious mental health disorders. The post holder plays a crucial role as a member of the multidisciplinary team, under the supervision and guidance of the consultant adolescent psychiatrist.
The post holder has SAS Ward doctor duties in the day to day care of Hope Unit patients. There are specific areas to exercise higher level of middle grade doctor clinical responsibility for selected patients, under the close supervision of the Unit consultant. These include managing the care of specific patients, chairing some Ward rounds, selected CPA's and discharge meetings for those patients.

Job description Job responsibilities Clinical
The Hope Unit admits on average up to 1 - 2 young people per week, referred directly from the community teams.
Under Consultant supervision, to provide psychiatric and routine medical care to 12 adolescent inpatients with severe acute mental health disorders. To undertake admission clerking, taking histories, weekly mental state reviews, risk assessments and review of observation status, and medication prescribing.
To collect and compile collateral information from relatives/carers and from other sources, recording risk events.
Clinical administration to write timely admission and discharge summaries on all patients, prepare reports for CPA reviews, and provide other written communications in discussion with the Unit consultant.
To ensure physical health of inpatients - undertake physical examinations, order appropriate investigations, and to attend to and competently manage general medical ailments, which are routinely encountered on inpatient units. To refer to and liaise with acute paediatric and medical services when required. To effectively run physical health clinic in collaboration with the nursing team and the pharmacist
To attend to and competently manage first line issues presenting on the unit along with nursing team, including acute psychiatric or medical emergencies.
To take specific responsibility for managing the clinical care and chairing CPAs / review and discharge meetings for specified patients using the Acute Care pathway, in agreement with and under supervision of the Hope Unit consultant
To attend MDT ward rounds, and actively contribute to the multidisciplinary review of inpatients. To run ward rounds when required in absence of consultant.
To attend and actively contribute to CPA/ Review meetings. To help review progress and help set case management/ recovery goals, in consultation with young people, their carers and professional networks, and key members of the team. To occasionally chair CPAs for clients under supervision of the unit consultant.
If the post holder has Section 12 approval - To carry out Mental Health Act assessments on the ward, when indicated. (This is not however a compulsory requirement).
There is No regular expectation in this post for outreach or outpatient work. However, if the post holder is interested there is an opportunity to be actively involved in access assessment discussions and carrying out such assessments as and when required. (Alternative travel arrangements would be available for non-car drivers on journeys essential to the carrying out of their duties.)
To utilise the Care Programme Approach, and also the New Mental Health Act, the Children Act and the Mental Capacity Act, when required.
To contribute when appropriate to education and supervision of junior psychiatry trainees, when they are attached to the service.
There is no formal day time on call duty.
Post holder will be encouraged to prepare reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals under the supervision of the Consultant as well as attend these Tribunals both in a shadowing capacity as well as giving oral evidence.
Governance
Safeguarding Children - To be alert to, communicate and seek senior staff consultation around Child Safeguarding concerns, in line with Trust protocol. To maintain mandatory update Safeguarding competence and awareness. To seek senior clinical guidance around any disclosures or possible disclosures made to them during their clinical duties.
To attend Clinical Governance meetings on the unit, and contribute to governance of the unit. To undertake audit with support from clinical / educational supervisor and from Trust Audit Department.
To adhere to the policies and procedures in support of the caseload, maintaining appropriate clinical records, confidentiality and administration.
To adhere to Trust policy on complaints, risk management and recording.
Educational
To maintain registration with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for CPD (if applicable), keep clinical knowledge up to date, and participate in the annual Personal Development Plan / Appraisal process, in line with Royal College policy.
The Trust fully supports CPD, and will grant study leave to ensure the appointee maintains CPD requirements in line with requirements of the post. Study leave entitlement is in line with national terms and conditions at 10 days per year, or 30 days over 3 years for full time Doctors.
To attend 1 hour weekly supervision meetings with the clinical Consultant supervisor
To conduct an annual audit project, and attend regular departmental audit meetings.
To participate in the in house training in the CAMHS inpatient services, and as appropriate to attend Bury Mental Health Department CPD events locally, local case conferences, and seminars.
There is option for development of a specific therapeutic skill / modality in keeping with the service requirements eg Family systems approaches, CBT, Solution Focussed therapy etc - in full discussion with the supervising Hope Unit consultant.
The Trust has a full fledged Young Persons Research Unit which is quite active in undertaking numerous research projects. There will be an opportunity for the post holder to take part in research projects in consultation with their supervising Consultant, if the post holder is interested.

Experience of psychiatry at CT level for at least 3 years Experience in inpatient psychiatry Knowledge of the MHA, experience of clinical application, awareness of MHA implications for younger people Awareness of key legislation NSF, NICE, MHA, MCA, Children Act Safeguarding awareness
