Job summary

We are offering an exciting professional development opportunity for a Paediatric Registered Nurse to join Caterpillar Ward.

We are a general medical ward caring for children from 0-12 with varying medical conditions, illnesses and needs. Our patients are admitted from a multitude of areas including Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Neonatal intensive Care and the Southwest region. Caterpillar Ward is our largest ward at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children - We cover 32 beds, 8 of these placed in our medical high dependency unit.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to be an integral part of the team on Caterpillar ward.You will gain experience in looking after children of different ages, from a wide range of medical specialties. We have a High Dependency Unit (HDU) that you can further develop your skills. Education is a key focus for us as we provide plenty of opportunity to attend courses at university, online and those run through our Faculty of Children's Nurse Education. Caterpillar has a fantastic and supportive team, and we would love to welcome you to our ward!

Applicants are required to have:

Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN) or RN (Child Branch - Part 15) Current NMC registration Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment Interest in the clinical area

Main duties of the job

Communication and Relationship skills:

Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in providing compassionate care for patients, visitors/relatives and colleagues. Contribute towards sharing good practice within the ward/department and Trust wide. Promote a positive image of University Hospital Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust at all times. Work cohesively with all members of the ward team and promote effective liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times. Communicate effectively within the team, participate in motivating and supporting team members and maintain confidentiality with patients and carers. Give written and verbal advice/teaching to patients and carers.

Good basic level of English language demonstrated through effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to solve problems and use initiative Ability to develop own clinical skills and a willingness to participate in continuing professional development Competency in medication administration including IV drug administration or willingness to undergo training Basic IT skills (e.g. Microsoft packages) Ability to take the lead, initiate and ensure appropriate action in response to the deteriorating patient Interpersonal skills - Calm - Supportive - Motivated - Professional Willingness to develop teaching skills Able to prioritise workload Able to manage difficult situations Awareness of audit & research Self-motivated A team player Recognition of own limits Flexible working practices for 24 hour service General good health, Able to work on feet for long periods. Aware that the role can be stressful and emotional at times.
