Job summary
We are seeking an experienced Phlebotomist to step into a Senior Phlebotomist role with a clear emphasis on operational leadership, supervision and administrative responsibility. This post functions as a team-leader role, supporting the Phlebotomy Services Manager with the day-to-day coordination of the service. Responsibilities include allocating work, coordinating and maintaining rotas, monitoring sickness and attendance, managing stock, and acting as the first point of contact for staff and patient queries. The post holder will provide on-the-day supervision, contribute to staff training and competency development, and ensure service standards and patient experience are maintained. Clinical duties will be undertaken where required but will primarily support the leadership and effective delivery of the service.
You will report directly to the Phlebotomy Services Manager, escalating any issues as required. To help facilitate your own training and development, it will be expected that you attend any Trust training courses deemed appropriate to your job role.
Main duties of the job
Provide day-to-day operational leadership and coordinationof the phlebotomy service across outpatient, ward and multi-site areas
Allocate work and redeploy staff as required to ensure safe, effective and continuous service delivery
Create, maintain and amend staff rotas (including break allocation) using Allocate Roster system, always ensuring adequate staffing levels
Monitor sickness and attendance, record leave, undertake return-to-work discussions, and escalate concerns in line with Trust policy
Act as the first point of contactfor staff, patients and service-related queries, escalating issues to the Phlebotomy Services Manager when appropriate
Provide on-the-day supervision, direction and supportto the phlebotomy team, responding to operational pressures and service challenges
Oversee stock control, including regular stock checks and ordering to maintain service readiness
Support and monitor staff training, competency development and mandatory training compliance, ensuring staff are released from rota appropriately
Maintain a high level of venepuncture skill to support colleagues, provide guidance with complex procedures, and deliver clinical cover when operationally required
Contribute to maintaining service quality, patient experience, infection control and governance standards

Job description Job responsibilities
Act as a senior member of the phlebotomy service, providing daytoday leadership and supervision for Band 2 phlebotomists to support the safe, effective and consistent delivery of services.
Provide professional guidance, support and direction to staff during shifts, responding to operational challenges, prioritising workload, and escalating issues appropriately in line with Trust policy.
Exercise oversight of workload distribution across outpatient, ward and clinic areas, using service activity information to support effective deployment of staff and continuity of service delivery.
Support the training and development of staff by contributing to the induction and ongoing education of phlebotomists, and by delivering or supporting venepuncture technique training for trainee doctors and other learners, in line with agreed competency standards.
Act as an initial point of contact for routine staff and patient queries or concerns, supporting informal resolution where appropriate and escalating complaints, incidents or complex issues to the Phlebotomy Services Manager.
Maintain oversight of service activity by reviewing daily performance information, identifying trends and pressures, and contributing relevant information to support service planning, governance and quality assurance.
