Job summary

Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to provide psychological expertise across both inpatient and community multidisciplinary team settings in City and Hackney. The post-holder will work across one of the male acute wards at the City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health (CHCMH) and the associated quadrant within the Community Mental Health Service (CMHS), a community-based multidisciplinary service, therefore offering continuity of care to those service users who are supported across these settings.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate work closely with psychologists and other professionals in the team maintaining a systematic approach to the assessment and care of Service Users with severe, complex and enduring mental health needs across community and inpatient settings.

The post holder will have the opportunity to engage with service development and must have experience in developing and facilitating group psychological interventions. The role also involves developing partnerships across local community groups to promote social connections, community engagement and participation. The post-holder will contribute to staff training and provide support (supervision, reflective practice, informal, ad hoc, and formal consultation) to other psychological therapists, mental health practitioners, nursing and other multi-disciplinary colleagues, carers and people with lived experience of mental distress. There are a broad range of leadership opportunities including leadership of service delivery and Quality Improvement projects, staff development initiatives, and supervision.

The successful candidate will be an active member of the City & Hackney inpatient and the Community Mental Health Service as well as closely involved with the Department of Psychological Therapies in City & Hackney, under whose governance they will experience continuing professional development.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications Essential

Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.Or Postgraduate Doctorate in Counselling Psychology as accredited by the BPS. Registered with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Psychologist Practitioner Clinical supervision training for doctoral psychology trainees

Desirable

Post-doctoral training in at least one therapeutic modality relevant to complex mental health. Additional relevant clinical and/or managerial knowledge and skills acquired through formal training, long or short courses, formal supervision (individual and/or group), structured self-study or experience (or a combination of these.)

Experience Essential

At least two years experience of work in the NHS. Experience of working with a wide variety of service user groups across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity. Relevant experience of working as a specialist clinical/counselling psychologist e.g. experience working in a multi-disciplinary teams for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems; including working within inpatient mental health settings. Experience of developing collaborative, effective risk assessment and management plans.

Desirable

Experience of development and delivery of therapeutic groups. Experience of teaching, training and supervision. Experience of the application of psychology in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters. Experience of line managing. Experience of service improvement

Knowledge and Skills Essential

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment. Highly-developed skills in the effective communication of highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to a wide variety of recipients in a range of settings within and outside the NHS, including the ability to produce comprehensive and coherent letters, reports and associated documentation. Highly-developed communication skills at overcoming barriers to understanding and acceptance. Skills in working in multidisciplinary settings. Skills in providing advice and consultation to other professional and non-professional groups Working knowledge of the practices and approaches of other key disciplines, professions and agencies involved in the care and management network, including medical, employment, social, educational and criminal justice systems. Doctoral-level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology. Knowledge of legislation in relation to mental health. Evidence of CPD as recommended by BPS. Competence in IT packages including standard keyboard skills.

Desirable

Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific groups of people with complex mental health needs (e.g. complex trauma, self harm, personality disorder, psychosis, dual diagnosis, persons with additional disabilities etc). Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies, especially as applied to people with severe and enduring mental health needs. Knowledge of the academic literature of the specialism.
