Job summary
The purpose of the post is to assist the GPs and nursing team in the delivery of a safe and high quality primary care service for the practice population.
The post holder will undertake delegated task and duties under direct or indirect supervision.
The post holder will work within clear parameters and lines of accountability after appropriate training and assessment of competencies
The post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients as the result of a direct referral from the clinical team.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood samplePerfoming venepunture in accordance with practice protocolsMaintaining accurate patient records on EmisThe correct labelling, packaging and storing of samplesEnsuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely mannerWorking collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

Clinical Role
Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible
Obtaining consent for the collection of a blood samples
Adhering to chaperone policy
Collection of samples of blood in accordance with training and local policies and procedures
Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity, ensuring correct packaging
Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical system
Ensuring all samples are stored in appropriate containers
Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion
Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
Point of Care Testing
Administrative/service support
Manage clinical supplies e.g. monitoring stock levels, ordering, re-stocking of clinical areas and maintenance of equipment.
Participate in quality improvement e.g. audit, development of protocols and new services.
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Relevant qualification in venepuncture GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths Competent in the use of Office and Outlook
Desirable
EMIS user skills Experience of working in a primary care environment
