Job summary

Applications are invited for a substantive and a potential 12 month locum post of Consultant in Major Trauma and Emergency General Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is based primarily at Queens Medical Centre.

The post holder will work alongside the other consultants within the Major trauma consultant team and other surgeons in the General and Vascular Surgery directorate.

The consultant will be responsible to the Head of Major trauma. The successful candidate will be expected to be within 6 months of their CCT at the time of interview and to have evidence of commitment to or experience of Major Trauma/EGS.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the out-patient and surgical treatment of patients within general surgery. Post-holders will be encouraged to develop a sub-specialty interest.

Main duties of the job

The Major Trauma component of the role will include running the Major Trauma service and joining the operating rota; this will be on a 1:8 basis including weekends and night care.

The Emergency General Surgery component of the role will include being responsible for the assessment and investigation of the surgical intake within the Surgical Triage Unit and delivering acute surgery to EGS patients; this will be on a 1:6 basis Monday-Thursday in day-time hours.

The Elective General Surgery component of the role will include a bi-weekly operating list and weekly clinic; this may be across all the Treatment Centre, Queens Medical Centre, Day Surgery Unit and City Hospital and some of these commitments will be in the evenings and weekends.

About us

NUH hosts the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (MTC), a level 1 centre covering a catchment area of 4 million people, resulting in one of the busiest MTC in the country. The bespoke 26-bedded MT unit was opened at QMC in 2012 which is run on a consultant of the week model. The unit has established strong links with the new National Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall and the intention is that a new rehabilitation clinical model will deliver improved outcomes.

NUH has one of the largest emergency general surgical services in the UK and undertakes one of the largest numbers of emergency laparotomies across the UK. The service is consultant-led, supported by ACPs, Specialist Doctors and Surgical Trainees. There is 24/7 sub-specialist acute surgery in Colorectal, HPB, UGI and Major Trauma separately, whilst sharing responsibility for acute general surgery.

NUH has several teams contributing to Elective General Surgery: Upper GI, Colorectal, HPB, Endocrine and Renal Transplant. The service is supported by Consultants, Registrars and Surgical Care Practitioners.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to attend all trauma calls when on a day shift and red trauma calls when covering a night shift but will also take referrals from local hospitals via phone to coordinate transfers within the regional Trauma Network. They will also provide operative cover for all torso injuries acutely and take backs and coordinate the surgical management of this complex group of patients. The appointee will be responsible for patients with multi-system injuries and will help to develop guidelines and standard operating procedures for areas of the MT pathway that fall under their expertise.

From an EGS perspective, the post-holder will ensure sub-specialty patients are appropriately transferred to colleagues, define clinical management plans and delivery acute surgery to EGS patients and their ongoing care until discharge.

From an Elective GS perspective, the post-holder will have operating sessions and clinics, as well as being involved in service developments and developing a sub-specialty interest.
