Job summary

Clinical Fellow in Glaucoma

This post offers advanced specialist training for 1 year in Glaucoma to be based at the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust

The post is suitable for an ophthalmologist nearing the end of their training or already in possession of CCT. It offers post accreditation experience beyond traditional UK registrar rotations for ophthalmologists wishing to specialize in glaucoma.

The glaucoma workload is complex and often managed across multiple subspecialties. Clinical sessions are directly supervised by one of two glaucoma consultants, all of whom offer a wide range of both traditional filtering surgery and newer minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, namely Preserflo Microshunt, Miniiject, trabeculotomy . In addition to gaining significant experience in these newer modalities of glaucoma therapy, fellows can also expect to become fully trained independent trabeculectomy surgeons by the end of the fellowship.

Fellows are also expected to undertake both supervised and independent cataract surgery lists, during which there is significant exposure to angle closure eyes.

Main duties of the job

Key attributes for potential applicants include strong team working skills, and an enthusiastic approach towards contributing to the work of the department.

The post holder will have the opportunity to attend outpatient clinics, and specialist clinics (for example Glaucoma and macular degeneration). The post will include covering the urgent clinics and on-call emergency duties from Monday morning to Saturday lunch time.

Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview

Adequate training in Ophthalmology

Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan

Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems.

Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach. Emergency eye casualty experience and extensive experience in Glaucoma.

Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that is adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues. To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take others perspectives and treat others with understanding.

Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills).

Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.

Able to demonstrate a commitment to and understanding of the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect appropriate to their individual needs. All staff are expected to engage in compassionate and inclusive leadership in the provision of high quality care and interactions with others.
