Psychological Medicine, Older Adult and Neurodevelopmental (PMOA & NDS) Directorateare offering an exciting opportunity for a proactive and proficient Inpatient Matron to come and join our team.

This is an exciting post that allows for close working and collaboration with senior management and clinicians in the future development of the directorate. The successful post holder will be based within the Directorate and will be an integral part of the Nursing, Quality and Assurance Team.

The successful candidates will have exceptional communication, motivational and influencing skills being able to influence and encourage teams to work across organisational boundaries whilst holding patient care at the heart of their work.

The candidates will need to be passionate about the delivery of high-quality patient care and have experience in leadership. The post holder will be a 'self-starter' and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a multi professional team.

Main duties of the job

The matron role will provide senior overall operational, quality and clinical leadership and responsibility. With the aim to provide senior nursing leadership and responsibility for overseeing the clinical care within the specialist inpatient and community teams under PMOA & NDS directorate, in particular within our national services within our Psychosis, Neuropsychiatric, Neuro-developmental, Perinatal and Eating Disorders pathways.

The post holder will deliver on the Matrons 10 responsibilities:

Leading by example

Making sure patients get quality care

Ensuring staffing is appropriate to patient needs

Empowering nurses to take on a wider range of clinical tasks

Improving hospital/team cleanliness

Ensuring patients' nutritional needs are met

Improving on patients experience (to include supporting teams in identification of ligatures and management plan regarding existing ligatures where patients are seen in outpatients)

Making sure patients are treated with respect

Preventing hospital-acquired infection when patients are admitted to the ward.

Resolving problems for patients and their relatives by building closer relationships

The Psychological Medicine, Older Adult and Neurodevelopmental Directorate are offering an exciting opportunity for proactive and proficient Matrons to work with Specialist inpatient services and community teams.

This is an exciting post that allows for close working and collaboration with senior management and clinicians in the future development of the specialist directorate, as well as being a key person in shaping future clinical practice across national services, pioneering new ways of care within mental health services.

About the location:

The successful post holder will be across all four boroughs. Our base is at Maudsley Hospital, however there is an expectation that you are able to travel between services and sites. We have satellite offices at Bethlem Royal Hospital and Blue Star House Lambeth.

Our Trust headquarters is located at 113 Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2).

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Mental Nurse (RMN)/ Registered Nurse Extensive post- registration continuing professional development

Desirable

Higher degree in nursing or equivalent experience

Experience Essential

Experience at a senior management level, managing change and introducing new ways of working for mental health nurses. Experience of multi-professional collaboration at a senior level. Experience of using audits and data effectively to guide the improvement or other QI initiative Current experience of relevant clinical practice, especially if working across different specialities.

Desirable

Experience of working in in specialist services in an inpatient and/or community pathway.

Knowledge Essential

Knowledge and understanding of Care quality commissions standards and the quality improvement agenda for the directorate. An appreciation of the unique needs of patients from diverse cultural communities Knowledge of current professional developments in nursing and nurse education Understanding of risk issues including Clinical and Health and Safety.

Desirable

Awareness of evidence-based practice in specialist areas such as eating disorder, neuropsychiatry, psychosis, neurodevelopmental and perinatal mental health

Skills & Abilities Essential

Able to advise on clinical nursing issues, demonstrating an understanding of professional guidance, nursing policy and relevant Trust and national strategies. Able to negotiate and influence in order to achieve objectives without direct line management Ability to establish credibility and good working relationships with representatives of external agencies and other stakeholders, and manage those relationships with sensitivity and compassion Ability to problem-solve, identify problems, review options and take appropriate action without a predetermined framework.

Desirable

Ability to negotiate and reach compromises in a manner, which inspires confidence and respect from others.
