Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Gastroenterology Day Unit. The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to adults with gastrointestinal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
The role involves the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for patients attending the day unit for biologic and advanced therapies, venesection, blood monitoring and related interventions. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical activities, including cannulation, venepuncture, infusion management and patient monitoring, working independently within their scope of practice and in line with Health Board and NMC standards.
Strong communication skills are essential, as the role requires sensitive and effective interaction with patients, relatives and the wider multidisciplinary team. The post holder will contribute to a positive, supportive environment, uphold the Health Board's values, and support service delivery through effective teamwork, organisation and governance activity.
The role also includes supporting and supervising junior staff and learners, contributing to service improvement, and maintaining ongoing professional development.
Main duties of the job
Undertake nursing assessments and deliver high-quality, person-centred care for patients attending the Gastroenterology Day Unit, including those receiving biologic and advanced therapies, venesection and blood monitoring.
Provide safe and effective clinical care, including cannulation, venepuncture, preparation and monitoring of infusions, administration of medicines, and monitoring patients before, during and after treatment, working independently within own scope of practice and in line with Health Board policies, NMC standards and clinical guidelines.
Support IBD clinics, provide telephone advice and patient education, and communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and relatives. Monitor, document and appropriately escalate changes in a patient's condition, including adverse reactions.
Maintain accurate and timely patient records using relevant digital systems, including WPAS, in line with information governance requirements. Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective patient flow and continuity of care.
Supervise and support junior staff, healthcare support workers and students, contribute to clinical governance, audit and service improvement activities, and comply with health and safety and infection prevention policies. Maintain mandatory training, ongoing professional development and participate in annual appraisal to meet NMC revalidation requirements.

Person Specification
Knowledge Essential
Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, infection prevention and information governance. Competence or willingness to develop skills in cannulation, venepuncture and intravenous therapies.
Experience Essential
Evidence of post-registration clinical experience within an acute or community healthcare setting.
Desirable
Previous experience in gastroenterology, endoscopy or a medical day unit setting. Experience supporting patients receiving biologic or advanced therapies.
Registration Essential
Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration. Commitment to continuing professional development and NMC revalidation requirements.
Communication Skills Essential
Good communication skills with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
Welsh language skills in Speaking/Listening at Level 3 or above
Abilities Essential
