Job summary
As a Prosthetic Assistant you will work as part of the multidisciplinary team at the Thornberry Centre, to assist the clinical team in all aspects of patient care and provide day to day administrative services to support the clinical staff.
Main duties of the job
As a Prosthetic Assistant you will work as part of the multidisciplinary team at the Thornberry Centre, to assist the clinical team in all aspects of patient care and provide day to day administrative services to support the clinical staff, ensuring a patient orientated service is provided. The clinical team consists of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, Physiotherapist, Prosthetists and Specialist Nurse.
To work as a highly motivated team member taking responsibility for all associated clinical and organisational tasks as defined by the job description
The Prosthetic Service provides services for the population of Plymouth, South and West Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Job description Job responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the role include:
Organise clinic rooms, prepare and clean treatment areas before and after treatment sessions
To prepare and raise the necessary paperwork for each clinic ensuring equipment is available when required.
Check all patient data on patient database is correct and accurate and ensure all actions, patient contact, clinic outcomes, decisions, queries, and telephone calls, etc. are recorded on patient administration system in a timely fashion.
To maintain contact and good communication between the service and patients, carers, clinicians, referrers, contractors, and other Organisation Departments, outside agencies and professionals including Transport Services, GP Surgeries, Social Services, etc.
To ensure effective verbal communications are maintained with patients, carers, relatives and members of the health and social care teams.
To ensure and maintain a team approach in maintaining effective administration services across the Prosthetic Service.
To work closely with clinicians ensuring they are regularly updated and advised on any potential problems that may have arisen, e.g. manufacturing problems or queries.
To provide cover in the absence of other members of the Prosthetic Administration Team e.g. annual or sick leave carrying out additional duties as required.
Input on database limb measuring forms and repair/adjustments forms within the clinic as directed by Prosthetist.
Act as chaperone at any clinic, as requested by patient or clinical staff member.
Escort patients to and from clinic rooms, assisting the less able to dress / undress as necessary, ensuring their privacy, dignity, safety, and comfort.
Prepare appropriate equipment for casting under the direction of the prosthetists. Assist during the casting process with patient transfers and with the casting technique under the direction of the clinician.
Weigh patients as required. Ensure patients accurate weight is brought to the attention of the requesting clinician and documented appropriately.
Be responsible for recording the treatment session accurately, legibly, and fully, in accordance with Livewell documentation policies and current local, national, and professional guidelines.
To undertake mandatory and other training as directed by Livewell Southwest.
To behave in a manner which does not bring the organisation into disrepute.
Respond to patient requests for stump socks and issue as appropriate. Enter data into the service database, monitor stock levels, and maintain minimum stock levels by placing orders for replacements as required.
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Experience of working effectively with patients/service users. Experience of working within a team. Experience managing workload and prioritising tasks. Clerical/administrative experience within customer care environment.
Desirable
Working within a Multi-Disciplinary Team. Experience of working with amputees and their families/carers. Previous SystmOne experience.
Knowledge Essential
Awareness of the needs of less physically able people. Awareness of the need for privacy and dignity. Good working knowledge of Outlook, Excel and Word. Effective interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.
Desirable
Familiarity with the 6 Cs Understanding of the five key aims. Knowledge of patient administration systems.
Qualifications Essential
5 A-C Grades at GCSE or equivalent Intermediate word processing MS Office, Word and Excel. NVQ Level II or able to demonstrate the skills; knowledge and ability to work to the required level.

Ability to work in stressful conditions. Ability to work as part of a team. Good standard of numeracy and literacy and clearly spoken. Good customer care skills. Good Telephone skills. Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to frequently travel independently and in a timely manner between Livewell Southwest sites and community locations including areas not served by public transport.
