We are now looking for a commercially minded Legal Counsel, Energy to join UPM Legal Functions. This position is located in Helsinki, Finland.

What you will do
Working alongside the VP Legal, UPM Energy, you will advise UPM Energy’s management and business teams on day-to-day operations, strategic development and investments. The role offers a unique vantage point in the Nordic electricity markets and the opportunity to develop into a versatile legal expert in the energy sector, with broad exposure to electricity production, physical and financial power trading, commercial projects and regulatory matters. In addition to the role’s core responsibilities, you may have the opportunity to continue providing legal support in your current area of expertise.
In addition, you will:
• Act as a trusted legal adviser and provide practical, commercially focused legal advice to UPM Energy on day-to-day operations and strategic matters • Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements relating to electricity production, sales, sourcing, investments and projects • Provide focused legal support on electricity-market matters, including power purchase agreements, physical and financial power trading, balancing arrangements and grid-related matters • Support business development, investments and projects by providing legal input and working independently with business stakeholders throughout the process and contributing to decision-making • Provide legal advice on regulatory and compliance matters relevant to the energy business • Identify and manage legal risks, claims and disputes, and provide recommendations as needed • Work with and manage external legal advisers when needed • Develop contract templates and legal processes Who you are
• You are a Master's degree holder in Law (LL.M.) from a Finnish university, or you hold an equivalent legal qualification • You have at least seven years of relevant experience in commercial contracts, business transactions and advisory work from a law firm, an in-house legal function or both, with a demonstrated ability to handle complex matters independently • You have experience in commercial contracts and business transactions and a strong interest in electricity markets. Previous experience in the power sector, electricity trading or electricity-market regulation is considered an advantage • You are eager to learn, quick to understand business, quickly grasp complex commercial and regulatory issues, and translate them into clear, practical and well-reasoned advice for business leaders and management • You work independently and take ownership of matters from start to finish • You are collaborative, solution-oriented and confident in influencing and communicating with senior management, business stakeholders, colleagues and external advisers • You have native-level proficiency in Finnish and excellent written and spoken English skills. Swedish is an advantage • You act with integrity and sound professional judgement
