Position Summary
Qnity is seeking an experienced R&D Polymer Chemist to drive the development of next-generation materials for advanced semiconductor packaging applications. This role will focus on the design, synthesis, characterization, and commercialization of novel polymers, monomers, oligomers, and functional materials that enable breakthrough performance in lithography, adhesives, and advanced interconnect technologies.
The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in polymer and organic synthesis with a strong understanding of structure-property relationships and product performance requirements. This individual will serve as a technical leader, collaborating across R&D, Applications Engineering, Manufacturing, Product Management, Quality, and Supply Chain to bring innovative materials from concept through commercialization.
This position is 100% onsite reporting to our Marlborough, MA facility. Candidates who currently live within a commutable distance will be given priority.
Please note: Sponsorship is not available for this opportunity now or in the future.
What You'll Do
• Design and synthesize innovative polymers, monomers, oligomers, and functional materials for advanced semiconductor packaging applications. • Develop new material platforms by applying polymer chemistry, organic synthesis, and structure-property-performance principles to meet customer and product requirements. • Characterize materials using advanced analytical techniques and leverage data-driven decision-making to accelerate product development. • Lead research projects from concept through commercialization, including scale-up, process safety, intellectual property generation, and Stage-Gate execution. • Evaluate scientific literature, patent landscapes, and competitive technologies to identify innovation opportunities and guide technical strategy. • Collaborate closely with R&D, Applications, Manufacturing, Product Management, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to transition new technologies into production. • Mentor junior scientists and engineers while fostering technical excellence, rigorous documentation, and strong experimental practices. • Support a global innovation team by sharing knowledge, presenting technical findings, and contributing to Qnity's expanding materials portfolio.
What We're Looking For Required Qualifications
• Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. • 3+ years of industrial experience in polymer synthesis, organic synthesis, or advanced materials development. • Demonstrated success developing and tailoring material platforms to meet performance and customer requirements. • Strong understanding of structure-property-performance relationships in polymeric materials. • Experience with core analytical techniques including GPC/SEC, NMR, LC/MS, HPLC, FT-IR, and related characterization methods. • Proven ability to develop purification and isolation strategies for polymers, monomers, and specialty chemicals. • Strong experimental design, problem-solving, and data analysis skills. • Track record of innovation, intellectual property generation, patents, publications, or technology commercialization. • Experience working within Stage-Gate or similar product development frameworks. • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. • Ability to collaborate effectively across global teams and time zones. • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience developing materials for semiconductor packaging, advanced electronics, or microelectronics applications. • Hands-on experience with lithographic materials and photo-patternable polymer systems. • Experience with structural adhesives, coating technologies, curing processes, and adhesion performance testing. • Expertise in thermal characterization techniques, including DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, and rheology. • Knowledge of semiconductor-grade contamination control, analytical cleanliness standards, and quality systems. • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), JMP, Minitab, or similar statistical tools. • Familiarity with air-sensitive, moisture-sensitive, or controlled-atmosphere synthetic techniques. • Prior mentoring or technical leadership experience in a cross-functional R&D environment.
