The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research program at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital pathology, and translational biomedical research. The project will focus on the development, validation, and implementation of state-of-the-art AI methodologies for the study of diverse pathological entities, with the ultimate goal of generating clinically meaningful discoveries that can improve diagnosis, prognostication, and patient care. The postdoc will lead research involving computational pathology, machine learning, deep learning, multimodal data integration, and advanced image analysis using digitized histopathology specimens. The successful candidate will work with large-scale whole-slide imaging datasets, molecular and clinical data, and other complementary omics platforms to identify novel biomarkers, characterize disease mechanisms, and develop predictive models with translational and clinical relevance. The research program encompasses a broad range of diseases including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory diseases, and other complex human pathologies and emphasizes the translation of computational discoveries into biologically and clinically actionable insights. The fellow will collaborate closely with pathologists, clinician-scientists, computational biologists, AI specialists, and engineers within McGill University and its affiliated research institutes, providing a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. In addition to conducting independent research, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of innovative computational pipelines, participate in grant applications and scientific publications, present findings at national and international conferences, and mentor graduate students and trainees. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to develop expertise in next-generation AI technologies while contributing to the advancement of precision medicine and the future of digital pathology.
The ideal candidate will be motivated to bridge computational innovation with clinical pathology, translating advanced AI approaches into tools that enhance disease understanding, improve diagnostic accuracy, identify novel therapeutic targets, and ultimately contribute to better patient outcomes. Main Duties & Responsibilities:
• Collaborate closely with pathologists, clinician-scientists, and multidisciplinary research teams to design and execute innovative translational research projects that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and computational pathology approaches to address clinically relevant questions. • Develop, implement, optimize, and validate state-of-the-art AI, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms for the analysis of digital pathology images and integration with clinical, molecular, and other multimodal datasets. • Independently lead research projects from conception through dissemination, including study design, data analysis, interpretation of results, manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings at national and international scientific meetings. • Develop robust computational pipelines and analytical workflows that facilitate the discovery of novel biomarkers, improve disease classification, and support precision medicine initiatives. • Work closely with pathology faculty to translate computational discoveries into biologically and clinically meaningful applications with diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic potential. • Manage multiple research projects simultaneously, establish timelines and milestones, coordinate collaborative activities, and ensure timely completion of project objectives. • Supervise and mentor graduate students, research assistants, and trainees in computational pathology and AI methodologies, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment. • Participate in the preparation of grant applications, ethics submissions, research reports, and progress updates, contributing to the long-term sustainability and growth of the research program. • Disseminate research findings through publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences. • Stay abreast of emerging developments in artificial intelligence, digital pathology, computational biology, and translational medicine, and incorporate novel methodologies into ongoing research activities. • Contribute to the strategic development of the laboratory's AI research program by identifying new collaborative opportunities, developing innovative research directions, and helping establish a nationally and internationally recognized program in computational pathology.
This position is designed to provide the successful candidate with increasing scientific independence and leadership experience, preparing them for an academic or industry career as an independent investigator. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to demonstrate initiative in project development, research management, interdisciplinary collaboration, trainee supervision, and the acquisition of external research funding.
Other Qualifying Skills & Abilities:
• Demonstrated excellence in scientific communication, including a strong record of presentations at national and international conferences. • Proven experience in preparing high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. • Experience developing research protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and study documentation. • Experience contributing to the preparation of competitive grant applications, including research proposals, budgets, progress reports, and funding agency submissions. • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple research activities and meet deadlines. • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex computational findings into biologically and clinically meaningful conclusions. • Experience mentoring and training graduate students, undergraduate students, research assistants, or other trainees in research methodologies and computational approaches. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams involving clinicians, pathologists, computer scientists, engineers, and data scientists. • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to foster collaborative research environments and contribute to team success. • Commitment to professional development and career advancement, including active participation in career development activities, leadership training, knowledge translation, and networking opportunities. • Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. • Experience working with digital pathology platforms, image analysis software, high-performance computing environments, or cloud-based computational infrastructure is considered an asset. • Demonstrated commitment to responsible conduct of research, reproducibility, data stewardship, and ethical use of artificial intelligence in biomedical research.
