Research

The project investigates wow the plant leaf mesophyll tissue reconciles optimization for photosynthesis and biomechanical stability. Live imaging of tissue growth, genetic manipulation of cell wall components, and mechanical measurements (e.g. AFM) are combined with mathematical modelling to quantify the structural "cost" of photosynthesis. This project will develop the postdoc's capacity for integrative, cross-disciplinary research at the interface of developmental biology, biomechanics, and mathematical modelling. The ambitious and broad scope of the project will position the candidate to define and pursue original research questions as a quasi-independent investigator. Professional skills

Teaching and mentoring opportunities through supervising graduate students and undergraduate interns on imaging, genetics, and mechanical measurement techniques. Conference presentations at international meetings to build visibility and provide field-specific feedback on the work. Manuscript writing will be central to the project, with the postdoc leading first-author publications where appropriate. The postdoc will also gain experience in grant and fellowship writing, drafting independent funding applications (postdoc/early career awards) using this project as preliminary data. Science communication and engaging with communities across various discipline to diversify the understanding of plant biology and disseminate the information to wider audience through writings in journals and in meetings. Concrete activities to achieve these training goals include: co-supervising 1-2 students on live imaging and genetic screens to build mentoring experience; presenting project findings at international conferences (e.g. ICAR, CSPB) per year; drafting at least one first-author manuscript and contributing to science dispatches; preparing an independent fellowship or grant application ; serving as a reviewer/features editor for relevant journals or conference abstracts once sufficiently established in the field; and organizing regular coordination meetings with international collaborators to manage timelines across the disciplines.
