Position Overview
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School seeks a reliable and multi-talented School Bus Driver & Facility Operator to join our team. This dual-role position plays a critical part in ensuring the safe daily transportation of our students and maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment.
Under the direction of the Deputy Head: Operations & Student Experience, the successful candidate will support school operations by driving one of the school vehicles, specifically a 2025 24-passenger Ford Mini-Coach bus, to transport students, and possibly members of the school community, to events and activities outside of regular school hours. Driving needs may fluctuate but are expected to be approximately 30-40 hours per month, spread over 3 days per week. The successful candidate will demonstrate positive interactions with students and members of the school community and maintain a high degree of professionalism.
Core Areas of Responsibility
Facilities
· Perform general facility maintenance, light plumbing, carpentry, minor electrical tasks, and routine touch-up painting.
· Assist with event setups and tear-downs, including moving tables, chairs, staging, and audiovisual equipment.
· Conduct daily campus walk-throughs to identify and resolve safety hazards or minor repair needs.
· Assist grounds team with basic campus upkeep, trash/litter pickup, leaf clearance, and seasonal snow/ice removal near entryways.
· Make recommendations for purchasing and maintaining inventory of necessary supplies, tools and equipment.
· Receive, transport, and distribute school deliveries, supplies, or furniture around campus.
School Bus Responsibilities
· Drive the 24-passenger Mini-Coach bus to transport students, and possibly members of the school community, to events and activities outside of regular school hours i.e. field trips, athletic events and special off-campus activities.
· Drive the bus during school days, usually starting at 2:30pm (other start times may be required).
· Conduct required daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle safety inspections.
· Maintain passenger discipline, safety, and a positive environment on the bus, adhering to school policies.
· Keep transportation logs, record mileage/fuel usage, and report mechanical issues or maintenance needs immediately.
· Keep the vehicle interior clean, sanitized, and properly equipped with emergency supplies.
Qualifications and Experience
· High School Diploma.
· Class 4 S endorsed driver's license with clean driver's abstract with no major traffic violations.
· 1-2 years of experience operating large vehicles or commercial transportation, preferred.
· School bus driving is a strong asset.
· Practical experience in general facilities maintenance, light repairs, or groundskeeping.
· Experience driving in winter conditions.
· Excellent driving skills with an emphasis on student safety.
· Demonstrate and uphold a strong commitment to health and safety.
· Ability to pass DOT-regulated physical examinations and drug/alcohol screenings
· Strong customer service skills and ability to maintain confidentiality with tack and diplomacy.
· Suitable demeanor to work within the diverse school community and ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, employees, contractors, and outside agencies.
· Strong verbal and written communications skills.
· Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs unassisted.
· Ability to bend, stoop, climb ladders, walk extended distances across campus, and operate power tools and cleaning equipment safely.
· Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
