Job Summary
The Facilities Technician supports the mission of St. Gregory of Nyssa Parish by maintaining safe, clean, functional, welcoming, and well-prepared parish facilities. Working under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor, this position performs custodial services, routine building maintenance and minor repairs, preventive maintenance, room and event setup, grounds care, safety and security support, and emergency response. The Facilities Technician supports Catholic worship, weddings, funerals, faith formation, parish ministries, and special events at both parish campuses and provides courteous, service-oriented assistance to clergy, staff, volunteers, parishioners, contractors, and visitors.
Essential Job Functions
Facility, Liturgical and Event Support
• Open, inspect, prepare, and secure parish buildings according to established schedules.
• Prepare churches and related spaces for Masses, sacramental celebrations, weddings, funerals, and other liturgies.
• Set up and restore classrooms, meeting rooms, halls, hospitality areas, tables, chairs, and equipment for parish activities and special events.
• Inspect entrances, gathering spaces, restrooms, lighting, HVAC conditions, and other public areas before scheduled activities.
• Respond promptly and courteously to facility needs identified by clergy, staff, ministry leaders, and event coordinators.
Custodial Services
• Clean churches, offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, hallways, restrooms, and other parish areas.
• Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, spot-clean, and maintain floors, carpets, entrances, glass, furnishings, and other surfaces.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms; replenish paper products, soap, and other supplies.
• Collect trash and recycling and maintain custodial closets and storage areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
• Use, store, and maintain cleaning chemicals and custodial equipment in accordance with safe work practices.
Maintenance and Building Operations
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs involving plumbing, carpentry, painting, patching, hardware, lighting, and similar building components within the employee's training and assigned authority.
• Replace lamps, filters, ceiling tiles, batteries, door hardware, and other routine maintenance items.
• Observe HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, security, and other building systems; identify and report deficiencies promptly.
• Conduct preventive inspections and complete assigned preventive maintenance tasks.
• Maintain tools, equipment, mechanical rooms, work areas, and maintenance supplies in an orderly and safe condition.
• Provide building access and appropriate assistance to approved contractors and vendors; report concerns to the Facilities Supervisor.
Grounds, Safety and Security
• Inspect sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, exterior lighting, and grounds for hazards, litter, damage, and maintenance needs.
• Assist with snow and ice removal, de-icing, seasonal grounds work, and exterior event preparation.
• Identify and correct safety hazards within assigned authority and immediately report conditions requiring additional action.
• Maintain clear exits and emergency access routes and follow parish and Archdiocesan safety procedures.
• Secure doors, windows, gates, keys, and access devices and report suspicious activity or security concerns promptly.
• Respond appropriately to building emergencies, including water leaks, power failures, HVAC problems, severe weather, and other urgent facility conditions.
Service, Stewardship and Teamwork
• Provide respectful and professional Catholic hospitality to parishioners, visitors, clergy, staff, volunteers, vendors, and contractors.
• Exercise care and responsible stewardship in the use of parish buildings, tools, equipment, supplies, utilities, and other resources.
• Communicate maintenance needs, completed work, safety concerns, and unusual conditions to the Facilities Supervisor.
• Work cooperatively with other Facilities employees and parish staff and adjust priorities when ministry or operational needs change.
• Perform other duties and assignments consistent with the responsibility level and general duties of the position.
Job Requirements
• Working knowledge of general building maintenance, custodial practices, and safe facilities operations.
• Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, ladders, custodial equipment, and grounds equipment.
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical, and mechanical maintenance sufficient to perform minor repairs and recognize when specialized service is required.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, labels, safety information, work requests, and equipment directions.
• Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with clergy, staff, volunteers, parishioners, contractors, and visitors.
• Ability to work independently, organize assignments, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately to changing priorities.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors and to work evenings, weekends, Holy Days, holidays, or special events when assigned.
• Valid driver's license required when driving parish vehicles or when otherwise required for assigned duties.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and to climb ladders and stairs as required for assigned work.
Education and Experience
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
• Three years of maintenance, custodial, facilities, building operations, or related experience preferred.
• Experience in a church, school, institutional, commercial, or similar multi-use facility is desirable.
Preferred Job Skills and Experience
• Demonstrated reliability, initiative, attention to detail, and pride in workmanship.
• Experience with preventive maintenance and commercial custodial/floor-care equipment.
• Ability to support the mission and values of the Catholic Church and to work respectfully in sacred and pastoral settings.
• Bilingual English/Spanish ability is helpful but not required.

This position has an hourly range of $20.00 - $30.00. An employee's pay within this range will be based on many factors including but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
