Position Description

The Chief Mechanic is directly responsible for supervising and coordinating all maintenance and repair of JBC’s fleet and mechanical assets, consisting of passenger vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment plus large and small mechanical assets. This role requires management and procurement experience coupled with hands-on advanced mechanical expertise, the ability to train and supervise a team of mechanics across multiple islands, and effective written and oral communication skills to coordinate with various departments. The Chief Mechanic will oversee and coordinate all troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing complex mechanical issues on a range of construction equipment, and will travel to various job sites to make electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic repairs on equipment such as excavators, loaders, trenchers, forklifts, and more.

Responsibilities

• Build and supervise a team of mechanics, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality repairs and maintenance.

• Schedule and perform advanced repairs and preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, and cranes.

• Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues, utilizing diagnostic tools and testing equipment.

• Schedule and ensure routine maintenance work is performed on all vehicles, trucks, and equipment.

• Service attachments and working tools such as hammers, brooms, compactors, and side booms.

• Schedule and perform quality controls checks inspecting and testing equipment before and after repairs to ensure functionality, compliance with safety standards and manufacturer specifications.

• Identifying and order parts and supplies necessary for repairs and maintenance.

• Partner with Warehouse, Purchasing and Expediting teams to maintain accurate inventory records and ensure the workshop is well-stocked with essential tools and materials.

• Ensure compliance with safety protocols and ensure all team members adhere to workplace safety regulations.

• Work closely with the Warehouse, Superintendent and project managers to prioritize repairs and maintenance schedules.

• Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to address equipment needs and concerns.

• Complete all necessary paperwork related to maintenance and repairs, including work orders and inspection reports.

• Maintain accurate records of repairs performed and parts used.

• Oversee the organization and cleanliness of work areas.

Required Experience

• High School diploma or GED Certificate.

• Formal training as Mechanic or engineering degree.

• 5-10 years of experience with heavy equipment repair with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.

• Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in the construction industry.

• Must be able to use a tablet to run diagnostic tests and enter job information.

• Welding experience preferred.

• Manual dexterity.

• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
