Your Opportunity

As an Acoustical Intern, you will support engineers on projects for public- and private-sector clients. This role suits a motivated student who wants to build practical skills in a collaborative consulting environment.

You will complete selected assignments that develop your knowledge of acoustics and engineering. Work will require a foundation in acoustics, physics, and engineering and will be supervised by an Acoustics Principal or Senior Associate.

Assignments may include reviewing architectural and mechanical drawings, plans, and specifications for varied building types. Additional work may include acoustical modeling, calculations, measurements, and site observations at existing or active construction sites.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Support Building Acoustics colleagues on project work. • Review drawings, specifications, schedules, details, and sketches from concept through construction. • Perform acoustical calculations using industry software and available analytical tools. • Apply fundamental acoustical principles to practical design challenges. • Assist with resolving technical issues during construction. • Collaborate with internal and external multidisciplinary teams. • Support the firm’s health and safety culture.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Clear written and verbal communication skills. • Foundational knowledge of acoustics and basic engineering calculations. • Strong listening, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. • Initiative, reliability, and willingness to learn. • Ability to collaborate with team members and meet deadlines. • Sound engineering judgment, creativity, and attention to detail. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. • Commitment to safe work practices. • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software is preferred. • Programming experience in Visual Basic, C, Python, or MATLAB is preferred.

Education and Experience

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics at an accredited university. Students pursuing music or performance production may also be considered if their studies demonstrate a strong interest in the related science and mathematics. #Student

This position will primarily work in person at the Chicago office at 350 North Orleans, with occasional site visits and travel.
