Position Highlights & Scope Based in Durham, NC , the Supply Chain Manager plays a critical leadership role across the Duke University Health System, directly managing Supply Chain Technician Systems Specialists across three regional hospitals and one Raleigh hospital . As our health system continues to grow, the scope of this role has the potential to expand to include operations in Cary and Lake Norman . Occupational Summary This key role will manage and coordinate strategic activities of the hospital Supply Chain Management functions in a proactive manner, including direct oversight of Supply Chain Technician Systems Specialists across multiple hospital locations. The Supply Chain Manager manages and implements Duke University Health System strategies to optimize staffing efficiency levels and produces results in achieving efficiencies in supply distribution, linen distribution, inventory management, supply expense analysis, and cost containment as outlined. Additionally, this leader ensures product quality levels and vendor service levels are met, participates as a member of the Supply Chain leadership team, and represents the department in management and associate forums. The role manages the overall day-to-day operations of Supply Chain Management to promote efficiency and effective patient care, while managing customer communication and supply chain processes to ensure optimal customer service standards are met. Work Performed Team Leadership & Multi-Site Staff Management Manage and mentor Supply Chain Technician Systems Specialists across three regional hospitals and one Raleigh hospital (with potential expansion to Cary and Lake Norman). Demonstrate advanced-level knowledge of all Supply Chain Technician Systems Specialist and Supply Chain Associate (Levels 1, 2, and Team Lead) job functions and responsibilities, serving as a mentor and preceptor to staff. Direct assigned staff in the attainment of performance standards and evaluate performance; oversee hiring, training, coaching, corrective actions, and related personnel actions. Produce high levels of employee satisfaction through cross-training, inter-departmental promotions, ongoing career planning, motivation, and transparent communication—increasing productivity and reducing departmental turnover. Match associate schedules to customer needs using metrics to support decisions, and apportion workload equitably across team members. Train associates to be knowledgeable in all supply chain-related functions, including customer service and efficient, productive methods of completing tasks. Operations & Systems Management Manage the day-to-day operations of Supply Chain in designated areas, which may include Business Office functions, Centralized Inventory Support, Centralized Shipping and Receiving, Courier functions, Linen replenishment, Records retention, and Bed Management/logistics. Establish, implement, and supervise programs to document the proper handling of requisitions, orders, receipt, and storage of stock. Ensure appropriate inventory levels are maintained and communicate proactively with customers regarding stocking, ordering, and deliveries. Conduct inspections of hospital facilities to ensure an uninterrupted flow of supplies and responsible items (e.g., linen) to departments and verify compliance with established policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Strategy, Compliance & Continuous Improvement Work collaboratively with medical staff and supply chain leadership to develop and maintain programs and processes designed to ensure compliance with service delivery standards; review and improve standards on an ongoing basis. Provide professional support to supply chain leadership; serve as a resource to enhance revenue, achieve optimal utilization, and reduce costs. Benchmark performance measures to track trends and identify areas for operational improvement. Serve on intra- and interdepartmental committees related to organizational objectives, seeking opportunities to promote the vision, mission, and values of Duke Health. Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures, ensuring adherence that reflects safe, honest, ethical, and professional behavior. Technical, Analytical & Financial Acumen Goal-oriented with an emphasis on creating efficiencies, reducing costs, and improving the quality of patient care delivery. Ability to think strategically, present and articulate direction and strategies, and act as a change agent by solving operational gaps to achieve departmental and organizational strategic plans. Establish, develop, and grow supplier relationships. Understanding of departmental budgets, key financial metrics, and statistical activity reports. Ability to manipulate and organize large data sets and interpret implications for the health system. Experience with ERP systems (preferably SAP ) or other supply chain information systems software. Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience in Microsoft Access and relational databases preferred. Knowledge of progressive supply chain strategies; certification in AHRMM (CMR) or APICS/ASCM preferred, but not required. Physical Requirements Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to push/pull unloaded and loaded supply carts requiring up to 100 pounds of exertional force daily. Frequent reaching, lifting, stooping, and bending in daily duties. Minimum Qualifications Education Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Healthcare, or a related field. Master's degree preferred, but not required. Experience 5 years of experience in logistics, supply chain, or healthcare leadership/management required ( at least 2 of the 5 years must be directly in supply chain/logistics). Experience with supply chain technology solutions (e.g., bar code scanners, automated supply cabinets, and other expandable wireless products) required. Previous experience in JIT (Just in Time) and LUM (Logical Unit of Measure) distribution processes required. Previous experience in Lean Six Sigma methodologies preferred, but not required.
