The Role
As Lead Nurse, you will provide clinical leadership and oversight of the practice nursing team, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, evidence-based and patient-centred care.
You will play a key role in maintaining high clinical standards, developing our nursing service, supporting the team and contributing to the practice's wider quality improvement agenda.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and oversight to the practice nursing team. Support the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nursing care. Undertake and oversee a range of primary care nursing services, appropriate to your role and competence. Support the management of long-term conditions and promote preventative healthcare and health promotion. Oversee clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and relevant practice targets. Support the delivery and monitoring of QOF and other contractual requirements. Ensure appropriate infection prevention and control standards are maintained. Promote effective safeguarding practice and ensure concerns are appropriately escalated. Support the induction, supervision, appraisal, training and professional development of nursing and healthcare support staff. Contribute to effective clinical governance, risk management and incident-reporting processes. Develop and review nursing protocols, policies and clinical procedures. Work collaboratively with GPs, the wider practice team, community services and other healthcare professionals. Promote a positive culture of learning, teamwork, accountability and patient-centred care.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Lead Nurse, preferably with established practice nursing experience within general practice, to provide clinical leadership across our nursing service.

Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse with current NMC registration and a valid PIN. Demonstrable post-registration clinical experience. Evidence of working autonomously and managing a varied clinical workload. Strong clinical assessment, decision-making and patient-management skills. Competence in relevant primary care nursing skills, appropriate to the role, such as: Chronic disease reviews Health checks and screening Immunisations and vaccinations Cervical screening, where appropriately trained Wound care ECGs and other relevant clinical observations Blood pressure and other routine clinical assessments Understanding of safeguarding, infection prevention and control, and clinical governance. Good understanding of professional accountability, confidentiality and information governance. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with patients, colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team. Ability to recognise and appropriately escalate clinical concerns and risk. Commitment to continuing professional development and maintaining clinical competence. Ability to contribute positively to a team and support a culture of learning, accountability and patient-centred care. Demonstrable ability to provide clinical leadership to nurses and healthcare support staff. Ability to support, supervise and develop members of the nursing team. Ability to identify and implement improvements in clinical practice. Understanding of clinical audit, quality improvement and relevant primary care targets. Ability to work collaboratively with GPs and the Practice Management Team to develop the nursing service. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise competing clinical and leadership responsibilities.
Desirable
We would also consider applications from experienced nurses working in other primary care or clinical settings who can demonstrate strong clinical leadership, team support, clinical competence and a genuine commitment to developing their knowledge and skills within general practice. We recognise that the skills and experience required for this role may be gained across different clinical settings and career backgrounds. However, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work confidently within a general practice environment and develop an understanding of primary care systems, processes and contractual requirements. You will be supported to develop your understanding of general practice where particular areas are new to you, including QOF, clinical indicators, primary care contractual requirements and practice systems and processes.
