Job summary
Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis. This will include:
- Ensuring our clinic rooms are stocked and prepared for each day
- Manage the stock levels and support the ordering of required stock
In conjunction with other team members, the post-holder will be prepared to cover the work of colleagues when they are absent through annual leave or illness.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There will be occasions where you will be required to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
b. Perfoming venepunture in accordance with practice protocols
c. Maintaining accurate patient records on TPP Systemone
d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at Addenbrookes
h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
i. Restocking of rooms at end of surgery
j. Taking vitals i.e. routine measurements like height, weight, and blood pressure (along with pulse, temperature, and respiration rate)
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the nursing assistant may be requested to:
Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit leadParticipate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient careSupport and participate in shared learning within the practiceComplete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
Any other duties appropriate which may be requested

Qualifications Essential
Good standard of general education Care Certificate (Skills for Care and Skills for Health) or equivalent.
