The Manchester Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Service is a city-wide service and it part of Adult and Specialists Services the Central locality.
The post holder will deliver nursing care and asset-based support to children and young people who are diagnosed with haemoglobinopathies and rare Anaemias.Nursing care will be delivered in settings where children and young people are including home, educational places or other social or culturally appropriate places. The postholder will collaborate with and support families , teachers and other professionals to ensure that information relating to a child's health condition is understood and adjustments are made to allow the child and young person to participate and be involved in social and educational opportunities
Main duties of the job
Deliver specialist Paediatric nursing care in a community setting to caseload of children and young people diagnosed with haemoglobinopathies and rare Anaemias
Provide genetic counselling to child & families affected by Haemoglobinopathy Disorders.
Provide Self-care management plans for children ,alongside School Care Plans.
Provide a community-based phlebotomy service to support the efficiency of community-based screening and care of children and the new-born to establish haemoglobinopathy status.
Establish an education and health care support facility for affected children and their families and provide continued care and education.
Actively work in partnership with patients and parents ensuring that parents/carers are confident and competent in caring for their child at home.
Liaise with hospital ward staff when children are admitted to hospital to support discharge planning
Contribute to performance data to reflect and report the productivity, service activities and disease prevalence.

What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:
Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police thats considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the childrens and/or adults barred lists.
Who Needs a DBS Check
Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.
The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.
