The Salaried GP will be a core member of the multidisciplinary clinical team working across the Morecambe Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), GP Out of Hours (OOH) Service, Home Visiting Service, and Clinical Assessment Service (CAS).

Main duties of the job

Unlike sessional GPs, the Salaried GP is expected to contribute to the strategic and operational development of services, support the clinical governance team, provide supervision and mentorship to colleagues, and actively contribute to innovation and service improvement across the business unit.

The post includes protected non-clinical time to support these additional responsibilities, alongside regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and study leave.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will:

Provide high-quality, safe and effective assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, and management of patients presenting with a wide range of urgent and unscheduled care needs.

Deliver consultations through multiple modalities including face-to-face, remote consultation, telephone triage and Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) support.

Undertake Out of Hours home visits where clinically appropriate.

Provide clinical support and advice to multidisciplinary colleagues working within UTC and OOH services.

Maintain contemporaneous, accurate and legally compliant clinical records.

Ensure care is delivered in accordance with national guidelines, organisational policies and evidence-based practice.

Participate fully in service delivery across UTC, OOH and home visiting services.

Leadership and Person in charge Responsibilities

The Salaried GP will play an active leadership role within the service by:

Acting as Person in Charge (PIC) when required, providing clinical leadership and operational oversight of the service.

Supporting clinical decision-making and escalation processes for colleagues across the multidisciplinary team.

Contributing to workforce planning and operational discussions to support service resilience and performance.

Supporting clinical and operational managers to achieve contractual KPIs, quality standards and service objectives.

Championing a positive culture of professionalism, accountability, learning and continuous improvement.

Clinical Governance Responsibilities

The post holder will:

Actively contribute to the Clinical Governance agenda across North, East and West Lancashire business units.

Participate in and lead audits, quality improvement projects, and service evaluations in agreement with the NEWL Clinical manager.

Investigate and contribute to the management of complaints, incidents, Patient Safety Incident Investigations (PSII), Significant Events and Learning Reviews.

Attend and contribute to governance meetings and multidisciplinary learning forums.

Provide expert clinical opinion during case reviews and governance discussions.

Support compliance with CQC standards, national quality requirements, and organisational governance frameworks.

Undertake Clinical Guardian audits both individually and as part of a senior group review panel and other governance activities as required.

Education, Supervision and Workforce Development

The post holder will:

Provide mentorship, supervision and support to newly appointed clinicians and developing roles including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs).

Provide educational support and supervision to GP Specialty Trainees (ST2/ST3) and other learners (i.e.. Trainee ACPs / Non-medical prescribers).

Contribute to clinical teaching, case-based learning and workforce development initiatives.

Promote multidisciplinary learning and foster a supportive learning environment.

Support the development of clinical competencies and professional standards across the workforce.

The post holder will:

Contribute to the ongoing development of Urgent Treatment Centre and Out of Hours services.

Support delivery of organisational priorities in line with NHS urgent and emergency care strategies and the NHS Long Term Plan.

Identify opportunities for service improvement, innovation and pathway redesign.

Contribute to digital transformation initiatives and the effective use of clinical technology.

Work collaboratively with operational and clinical leaders to develop and implement new models of care.

The post holder will:

Develop effective relationships with local GP practices, acute trusts, community services, mental health providers, ambulance services, social care teams and other stakeholders.

Support the development of integrated care pathways to improve patient outcomes and experience.

Act as an ambassador for FCMS and promote collaborative working across the wider health and care system.

The post holder will:

Maintain full GMC registration and licence to practise.

Participate in annual appraisal and medical revalidation processes.

Maintain mandatory training and professional competencies.

Undertake continuing professional development relevant to the role.

Utilise the allocated study leave entitlement to support professional development.

Work within the policies, procedures and values of FCMS.

The post holder will:

Ensure full accreditation and requirements of practice to include full registration with GMC license to practice, membership of an appropriate defence body (if required) and delivery of annual evidence for appraisal or accreditation purposes in keeping with national requirements

Qualifications Essential

Relevant Professional Qualification GMC Registration Minimum of 6mths experience in GP including Out of Hours

Experience Essential

Experience of working independently as an unsupervised practitioner in the primary or urgent care setting Experienced in independently managing EoL patients and home visits. Portfolio of evidence showing achievements in practice/speciality Evidence of excellent clinical record Maintained development of clinical leadership skills Evidence of significant involvement in change Awareness of impact of evidence-based practice within Primary Care and/or Urgent care/OOH.

Desirable

Demonstrates ability and knowledge on how to undertake audit and feedback to clinicians
