About this role

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Senior Prescriptions Clerk to join our busy and friendly GP practice team.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe, accurate and timely processing of prescription requests while supporting the day-to-day operation of the prescriptions team. Working closely with GPs, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, community pharmacies and administrative colleagues, the post holder will help ensure patients receive their medications safely and efficiently.

This role requires excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills and a sound understanding of repeat prescribing processes within primary care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Process repeat and acute prescription requests in line with practice policies and prescribing protocols.Ensure prescriptions are accurately prepared and authorised within agreed timescales.Identify and escalate medication queries, prescribing issues and patient safety concerns to the appropriate clinician.Monitor medication review dates and ensure patients are recalled when reviews are due.Act as a point of contact for patients, pharmacies and healthcare professionals regarding prescription enquiries.Support and provide guidance to members of the prescriptions team.Assist in reviewing and improving prescribing administration processes.Support medicines optimisation initiatives and prescribing audits.Process medication-related correspondence received from hospitals and other healthcare providers in accordance with practice protocols.Maintain accurate patient records using the practice clinical system.Contribute to quality improvement activities and prescribing safety reviews.Comply with all information governance, confidentiality and safeguarding requirements.

Eastham Group Practice is a PMS contract-holding medical practice in Brombough and the Eastham area of Wirral. The Practice has been established in the local area since the 1940's, and currently serves approximately 11,200 patients.

We have seven GP partners, three Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and one salaried GP. Our clinical staff also includes two Practice Nurses, two Nurse Associates, two Health Care Assistants, and a Physiotherapist for joint injection support.

Eastham Group Practice is a training practice, hosting GP registrars, medical students, and student nurses on training placements.

We are a part of Healthier South Wirral PCN. Together, we serve a diverse community across South Wirral, delivering proactive, personalised, and integrated care. Our multidisciplinary team includes GPs, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, mental health practitioners, social prescribers, and more, working in partnership with community, mental health, social care, and voluntary services.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Previous experience working within a GP practice prescribing or medicines management environment. Experience processing repeat prescriptions using EMIS Web. Experience handling confidential patient information. Experience managing a busy workload and competing priorities.

Desirable

Experience supervising or mentoring administrative staff. Experience supporting prescribing audits or quality improvement projects. Knowledge of Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). Understanding of medicines optimisation and prescribing safety initiatives.

Qualifications Essential

Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent including English and Maths). Evidence of continuous professional development.

Desirable

Qualification in medicines management or healthcare administration.
