The Penetrant Testing Technician supports production and quality activities by performing liquid penetrant testing in accordance with approved procedures, customer requirements, and applicable codes and standards. This position is intended for either a current PT Level II technician or a motivated candidate working toward Level II certification. Current PT Level II certification is not required for consideration. However, candidates must have completed relevant NDT classroom hours or possess formal NDT education. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, dependable, comfortable working on night or second shift, and able to work effectively as part of a team. This individual should take ownership of assigned responsibilities and be invested in the overall success, quality, and performance of the group. Key Responsibilities Perform visible or fluorescent liquid penetrant testing, as qualified and authorized, in accordance with written instructions, approved procedures, and customer requirements. Prepare components and inspection surfaces before testing. Apply penetrant materials, observe required dwell and development times, and complete post-inspection cleaning. Set up and verify inspection equipment and materials before use. Confirm that inspection conditions meet procedural requirements. Identify and document relevant indications. Interpret and evaluate inspection results within the limits of the employee’s current certification and assigned authority. Accurately complete inspection reports, production records, and supporting documentation. Promptly communicate indications, nonconformances, process concerns, or quality issues to the appropriate supervisor or Level II/Level III personnel. Maintain penetrant materials, equipment, reference standards, and work areas in a clean and serviceable condition. Follow all safety, quality, environmental, and facility requirements. Participate in pre-job meetings, safety discussions, training activities, and team-planning efforts. Work closely with inspectors, production personnel, quality representatives, and supervision to support safe and efficient operations. Maintain dependable attendance and arrive prepared for assigned night or second-shift duties. Assist other team members when needed and contribute to the overall success of the inspection group. Complete assigned training, examinations, and documented experience requirements needed to obtain or maintain PT Level II certification. Support audits, customer reviews, and quality inspections when requested. Certification and Authority Candidates who currently hold an employer-based PT Level II certification may perform inspections and evaluate indications within the limits of their certification, approved procedures, and applicable customer requirements. Candidates who have not yet obtained PT Level II certification will work under appropriate supervision and may not independently accept or reject inspection results until all required training, experience, examinations, and employer certification requirements have been successfully completed. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Completed PT classroom training, documented NDT classroom hours, or formal education in nondestructive testing. Basic understanding of penetrant testing principles and inspection processes. Ability to complete technical training and certification examinations. Ability to accurately follow written procedures and work instructions. Ability to complete inspection records and basic computer-based documentation. Ability to work the assigned night or second-shift schedule. Ability to work independently while remaining engaged with the larger team. Ability to pass applicable pre-employment screening requirements. Preferred Qualifications Current or previous PT Level II certification. Previous experience in penetrant testing, manufacturing, fabrication, machining, quality control, or industrial inspection. Familiarity with visible or fluorescent penetrant testing. Documented PT on-the-job training or previous inspection experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, or electronic inspection reporting systems. Additional NDT classroom hours, method certifications, or technical education. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Self-motivated and able to remain productive with limited day-to-day supervision. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate inspection results. Willingness to learn and accept coaching from experienced technicians and Level III personnel. Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent attendance. Able to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors and coworkers. Able to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Willing to support coworkers and contribute beyond individually assigned tasks when needed. Invested in the overall success, quality, and reputation of the inspection group. Committed to safety, quality, procedural compliance, and continuous improvement. Able to organize assigned work and meet production or reporting deadlines. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during the shift. Ability to perform repetitive inspection and material-handling activities. Ability to lift and move components, equipment, or inspection materials within established facility limits. Ability to visually examine components and indications, with corrected vision when permitted. Ability to distinguish colors and contrast levels required for the applicable penetrant testing process. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment. Ability to work safely around inspection chemicals and industrial equipment.
