We are seeking a strategic, forward-looking Director, Exam Development to provide operational and program leadership for the innovation and continuous improvement of our assessment portfolio.

The ideal candidate will pair deep exam-development expertise with the judgment and leadership to move confidently between strategy and execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides strategic oversight and daily leadership for the innovation, development and analysis of certification, continuing certification, in-training, focused practice, and subspecialty assessments across all ABEM certification activities; ensures on-time, high-quality delivery of assessment content, form development, and exam integrity.

• Translates executive direction into detailed program plans with milestones, deliverables, owners, resources, and reporting expectations. Establishes examination development decision-making pathways, critical milestones, readiness checkpoints, and escalation practices.

• Directs and contributes to the evaluation of assessment development activities, including the evaluation of item, case, and psychometric performance. Directs and contributes to examination-related evaluations, surveys, scientific presentations, and related technical publications. Implements improvements to assessment development activities on a regular basis.

• Leads readiness reviews for assessment content and form development and ensures risks, dependencies, and mitigation plans are visible to executive leadership. Leads post-mortems, improvement backlogs, and process enhancement efforts that improve efficiency, quality, clarity, and stakeholder experience.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree required.

• Seven to ten years of related experience in examination development, assessment, certification,

• credentialing, or related field required. Experience that includes development of an in-person,

• case-based assessment (e.g., OSCE, oral board examination) is preferred.

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in leadership and supervision.

• Fundamental understanding of project management principles.

• Demonstrated ability to efficiently lead complex, high-stakes assessment development

• programs with multiple timelines, contributors, risks, and stakeholder groups.
