Job summary
This is an exciting development opportunity for an experienced nurse wishing to progress towards a Senior Nurse Practitioner role within a fabulous team. The successful candidate will be appointed at Band 6 and supported through a structured development pathway. On successful achievement of the required competencies, and subject to organisational need and funding availability, candidates may be considered for appointment to a Band 7 Senior Nurse Practitioner role.
You'll join our Advanced Nurse Practice team, a close-knit team of four who work flexibly and support one another whilst being part of a wider multidisciplinary team. The role offers a diverse mix of clinical practice, direct patient care, teaching, learning and quality improvement activity, providing an excellent opportunity to develop advanced clinical and leadership skills within specialist palliative and end of life care.
Main duties of the job
As part of our Advanced Nurse Practice team, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality end of life care within our In-Patient Unit. Combining autonomous clinical practice with teaching, service development and quality improvement activities, this role offers an exciting opportunity to develop advanced practice skills within a supportive multidisciplinary environment and follow a structured pathway towards Senior Nurse Practitioner level.

Job description Job responsibilities
Clinically, you will be based predominantly on the In-Patient Unit working with the Nurse Consultant, Nurse Practitioners and ward teams to deliver care to patients in our nurse led End of Life Care Beds. As part of the team, you will undertake admission assessment, develop management plans and review the care of these patients whilst also supporting their family/friends. You will be involved in the ongoing development of this service. You will also support the wider care of patients within the Hospice either directly or by supporting junior staff to deliver care. In addition to a clinical role, you will be involved in academic activity including teaching, audit and promoting evidence based practice. Non-clinical responsibilities including clinical governance and service development activity will increase as the post holder progresses in the role.
You may have experience at a senior level or be seeking to develop and enhance your leadership and clinical skills. St Gemmas is keen to support the development of nurses who are committed and have a drive to ensure high quality care at end of life. You must be a non-medical prescriber in palliative care or committed and eligible to undertake this qualification in 2027.
You will have demonstrable experience in caring for patients at end of life and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will have the courage to take on challenging situations by utilising advanced communication skills, ensure the best outcome for patients and provide support for nursing and the wider team. You will be a confident role model, leading by example, and be able to teach, support and mentor a range of clinical and non-clinical staff. You will seek to enhance the patient and staff experience with every action you undertake.

Experience Essential
Significant experience at Band 5 or above in specialist palliative care Experience of teaching health professionals/students and demonstrates proven teaching skills Experience of implementing aspects of the clinical governance agenda and understanding of clinical governance Awareness of key-policy drivers influencing palliative and end of life care Demonstrates effective leadership skills and ability to facilitate change, motivating and influencing staff of various levels and relationships Computer literate across electronic patient records, Microsoft, internet email etc.
