Main duties of the job

Main dutiesCarry out phlebotomy and routine patient observations, including blood pressure, height, weight and BMI.Undertake ECGs, NHS Health Checks and basic health monitoring, following appropriate training and competency assessment.Support long-term condition reviews and health promotion.Maintain accurate patient records and follow infection prevention and confidentiality procedures.Work closely with the wider clinical team to provide safe, caring and patient-focused care.Assist with other appropriate HCA duties in line with training, competence and practice needs.

Job description Job responsibilities

ob PurposeTo support the clinical team in providing high-quality, safe and effective care to patients of the practice.

The post holder will undertake phlebotomy and a range of Healthcare Assistant duties appropriate to their level of training and competence. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary practice team, contributing to health promotion, long-term condition monitoring, preventative care and the efficient running of treatment room services.

The post holder will work within agreed practice policies, protocols and procedures and will recognise and work within the limits of their professional competence.

Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesPhlebotomyUndertake venepuncture for patients in accordance with practice procedures.Confirm patient identity and ensure the correct blood tests have been requested.Prepare, label and handle specimens accurately and safely.Ensure specimens are stored and transported appropriately.Maintain appropriate infection prevention and control procedures.Recognise and respond appropriately to patients who become unwell during or following venepuncture.Maintain accurate records of procedures undertaken.Ensure appropriate stock levels of phlebotomy equipment and report shortages as required.Healthcare Assistant DutiesSubject to appropriate training, assessment of competence and practice requirements, duties may include:

Blood pressure measurement and monitoring.Height, weight and BMI measurements.Pulse and other basic physiological observations.Urinalysis and collection/preparation of specimens.NHS Health Checks, where appropriately trained.ECG recording.Monitoring associated with long-term conditions in accordance with practice protocols.Diabetic foot checks, where trained and competent.Simple wound care and dressing changes, where appropriately trained.Removal of sutures or clips, where appropriately trained.Health promotion and lifestyle advice within agreed protocols.Smoking status recording and appropriate signposting.Assisting clinicians with procedures and examinations where required.Chaperoning patients in accordance with the practice chaperone policy.Preparing clinical rooms and equipment for surgeries, clinics and procedures.Undertaking other clinical observations or procedures following appropriate training and competency assessment.Any additional clinical duties will only be undertaken where the employee has received appropriate training, has been assessed as competent and the activity has been delegated appropriately.

Infection Prevention and ControlThe post holder will:

Follow practice infection prevention and control policies at all times.Maintain high standards of hand hygiene and use personal protective equipment appropriately.Clean and prepare clinical areas and equipment in accordance with practice procedures.Dispose of clinical waste and sharps safely.Report any infection prevention concerns, incidents or needlestick injuries promptly.Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe clinical environment.Patient CareTreat all patients with dignity, respect, compassion and sensitivity.Provide reassurance and support to patients who may be anxious about procedures.Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues.Recognise when a patient's needs or condition are outside the post holder's competence and seek assistance from an appropriate clinician.Escalate concerns regarding a patient's physical or mental wellbeing promptly.Clinical Administration and Record KeepingMaintain clear, accurate and contemporaneous patient records.Record observations, procedures and outcomes accurately on the clinical system.Ensure specimens, forms and documentation are completed correctly.Follow practice procedures relating to patient identification and confidentiality.Assist with clinical stock control, ordering and rotation as required.Check clinical equipment and report faults or concerns promptly.SafeguardingBe aware of responsibilities relating to the safeguarding of children and adults at risk.Complete safeguarding training appropriate to the role.Recognise potential safeguarding concerns and report these in accordance with practice procedures.Work in accordance with local and national safeguarding policies.Confidentiality and Information GovernanceThe post holder will:

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.Handle personal and clinical information securely and appropriately.Comply with practice policies relating to confidentiality, information governance and data protection.Only access patient information necessary for the performance of their duties.Maintain confidentiality relating to patients, staff and the business of the practice.Health and SafetyThe post holder will:

Participate in induction, mandatory training and ongoing professional development.Maintain competence in phlebotomy and other delegated clinical activities.Participate in competency assessments where required.Attend relevant training and updates.Participate in appraisal and performance reviews.Identify personal learning needs and discuss these with their line manager.Maintain appropriate evidence of training and competency.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Experience of working with members of the public. Ability to provide a professional and caring service. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

Previous experience working as an HCA or phlebotomist. Previous experience within general practice or primary care. Experience of using GP clinical systems. Experience of carrying out ECGs, NHS Health Checks and long-term condition observations. Training in infection prevention and control. Safeguarding training. Basic Life Support training.

Qualifications Essential

Qualified in Phlebotomy Good standard of general education, including literacy and numeracy. Completed the HCA competency assessment training.
