Job summary
The Trust is looking to recruit one substantive consultant neurologist to be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site to ensure that patients have access to high quality neurology services locally in a timely manner. This post will be based full time at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, Queen Elizabeth site in Wooleich.
Applicants must be included on the GMC Specialist Register for Neurology or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the date of interview. The successful applicant will provide a comprehensive high-quality inpatient and outpatient Neurology service.
Main duties of the job
This job plan is indicative of the expected clinic and ward commitments. It will be revised once suitable candidate is appointed, but the contribution of 3 OP clinics will not change. Full time appointees are expected to do four clinics a week (4 hourly clinic = 1 PA) and would support one of them being a specialty clinic if of relevance to the trust. Each clinic will have 0.5PAs of admin time allocated as per ABN guidance. Specialist clinics/services that would be of particular interest are: a. Movement disorders/ Parkinsons disease (including supervision of a PD nurse), Epilepsy clinic (including supervision of an epilepsy nurse) and neurorehabilitation (potentially including a monthly regional MDT; Monthly complex clinic and support to the spasticity service/ specialist neuro-physiotherapist). We expect that at least one of the clinics will have medical students (teaching clinic). Full time appointees will be expected to do up to 1.5 days of ward referrals a week and to cross-cover colleagues on leave They are expected to attend radiology/ rehab MDTs. We are a teaching site for Guys, Kings & St Thomas (GSTT) Medical school and appointees will be expected to teach medical students in teaching sessions and in clinics/ on ward rounds. Job description Job responsibilities
a. Clinical Responsibilities
1. A full-time post-holder would be expected to undertake 3 neurology clinics each week (4 hours), and to see an average of 7 new patients (30mins/ patient) in each clinic. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that they are of clinical relevance to the service and local needs.
2. There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.
3. We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at the QEH hospitals. Full time colleagues usually do 1-2 days of ward cover a week. We endeavor to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 4-6 ward patients per session.
4. There is currently no on-call commitment.
b. Medical Education & Teaching
Candidates are expected to contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training. There is a commitment to teaching of neurology to GSTT undergraduates in both formal tutorial sessions as well as in clinic/ on ward rounds, foundation doctors, Core Medical Trainees and GP Registrars in turn with other colleagues in the department
c. Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements
d. Continuing Professional Development
1. Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level
2. Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice
a. Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, in line with the Trusts commitment to supporting revalidation.
b. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
3. Colleagues are encouraged to attend Kings College Hospital in person or virtually to participate in their Academic neuroscience programme on a Friday morning.
4. The Trust is committed to providing mentoring to newly appointed consultants.
