Operator I, Machine
Job Purpose: The Machine Operator safely operates and maintains equipment used to disassemble, recondition, and assemble railcar wheelsets. This position ensures products meet quality and safety standards through precise machine operation, inspection, and measurement, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of railcars throughout the rail network.

Key Job Elements: 1. Wheelset Manufacturing & Reconditioning Operate machinery to disassemble railcar wheelsets, recondition axles, mount wheels, install bearings, and rebuild wheelsets to required specifications and quality standards.
2. Machine Operation & Equipment Maintenance Set up, operate, monitor, and adjust equipment to ensure safe and efficient production; troubleshoot issues and perform routine maintenance while reporting equipment repair needs.
3. Quality Assurance & Precision Measurement Inspect components and finished products using measuring devices such as gauges, calipers, and micrometers; work to tight tolerances and identify defects or nonconforming materials to ensure products meet specifications.
4. Technical Documentation & Process Control Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and production specifications; maintain accurate records and communicate quality, safety, or operational concerns to supervision.
5. Safety, Material Handling & Team Support Safely move materials throughout the production process, maintain a clean and organized work area, follow all safety procedures, and assist other departments as needed to support operational requirements.
Education / Training: • Basic shop math; • High School Diploma or GED.
Qualifications and Experience: • Must be able to work any shift, overtime and weekends to meet business demands; • Follow all work procedures and maintain accurate documentation accordingly; • Abide by all safety regulations; • Operate overhead cranes; • Must have complete understanding of safe work practices; • Ability to multitask and work with minimal supervision; • Must be able to read and write legibly to complete production reports with accuracy; • Must be quality oriented and a team player; • Strong attention to detail; • Organizational skills; • Flexibility in shift and schedule; • Good attendance record; • Other duties as assigned.
