About this role
K–8 Art Teacher A successful candidate is a joyful, creative educator who loves helping students discover that they are artists. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and grow a cohesive K–8 visual arts program at a collaborative, project-based STEM school. At The Expedition School, art is more than a special area—it is a way of thinking, creating, communicating, and solving problems. Our art program is grounded in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and intentionally builds artistic skills and habits of mind from kindergarten through eighth grade. We are looking for an educator who is excited to build a program over time, develop students' skills and confidence, and create meaningful connections between art and our interdisciplinary PBL experiences. In this role, you will:
• Teach middle school visual art (Grades 6–8) in a dedicated art classroom, while also bringing engaging art experiences directly to our K–5 classrooms.
• Further develop a cohesive K–8 progression of skills, techniques, media, and artistic habits of mind so that students grow as artists each year. Use your ideas and build off of what is already available.
• Integrate visual art into multiple Project-Based Learning experiences each year, collaborating with classroom teachers to make authentic interdisciplinary connections.
• Help students learn to critique their own work and the work of others, use artistic vocabulary, respond to feedback, revise, and take pride in producing high-quality work.
• Showcase student creativity throughout the school through dynamic displays, exhibitions, and opportunities for permanent student-created installations.
• Build a program that grows stronger over time, with the goal of sending our graduates to high school as confident, capable art students with a strong foundation of skills and creative thinking.
What You'll Find at TES Be part of a strong, creative, and collaborative staff who put students at the center and value both excellence and joy in learning. You will be supported through coaching, collaboration, and access to ample art supplies and materials. You will also have the opportunity to shape and grow a program while you build off of what is already established. The position includes a dedicated middle school art classroom as well as a mobile K–5 art model, with a well-stocked art cart that allows you to bring meaningful, hands-on art experiences directly to elementary classrooms. TES operates on a modified year-round schedule designed to support student learning, teacher collaboration, and professional growth. A Highly Qualified Candidate Will:
• Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education and be licensed in K–12 Art.
• Have experience teaching visual art across multiple grade levels, with the ability to adapt instruction for students ages 5–14.
• Develop engaging, standards-aligned art experiences grounded in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Visual Arts, while thoughtfully using, adapting, and improving existing curriculum and lessons.
• Build students' artistic skills and confidence over time, with an understanding of how foundational skills develop into increasingly sophisticated artistic practices.
• Be skilled at organizing and managing art materials, supplies, and multiple projects in an active K–8 art program.
• Create a well-managed, joyful, and inclusive learning environment with high expectations for every student.
• Use effective classroom management strategies and differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of developmental, learning, and support needs, including students with disabilities and students on the autism spectrum.
• Collaborate enthusiastically with classroom teachers and other staff to integrate art into PBL experiences and strengthen student learning.
• Take initiative, learn and grow as an educator, and contribute ideas that help strengthen and expand the art program over time.
• Communicate regularly, professionally, and effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
• Support and contribute to TES's philosophy, CREW values, and school policies.
• Take pride in celebrating and displaying student artwork in ways that elevate student voice and contribute to the visual culture of the school.
