About this role
PURPOSE Assist a certified teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans; provide clerical support for instructional activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities required to provide general classroom and instructional assistance.
• Must have strong office, computer, and oral and written communication skills. Incumbents must possess knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, general instructional methods and techniques, and basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; provide instructional support to various teachers.
• Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
• Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments and record grades; maintain student records and files as assigned.
• Assist teachers with implementing lesson plans; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; explain and assure student understanding of classroom assignment and homework instructions.
• Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required; monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
• Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned by the position; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition as required; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.
• Provide classroom support to the teacher by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
• Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
