POSITION: English Language Learner Teacher (One Year Only) LOCATION: Pell Elementary REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of English Language Learners SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027
JOB DESCRIPTION: To create flexible elementary grade programs and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students; to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education, in accordance with each student's ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
• Hold or be currently eligible for a valid Rhode Island Certification as an Elementary ELL educator (K-6);
• Master's Degree in Elementary Education, TESOL preferred;
• Evidence of developing teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of each student;
• Ability to know and utilize technology in the teaching and learning process;
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, education experience, teaching, educational experience, and the interview process;
• Any such alternatives to the above qualifications as the committee may deem acceptable and appropriate.
• Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To work directly with the Pell Administration team and the Director of English Learners in identifying non-English speaking students
• Assume responsibility for testing, scheduling and the teaching of English using a variety of evidence-based ELL methodologies and strategies.
• Provide ELL push in and/or pull-out instruction to students in grades K-4.
• Assist in administering required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement for students in grades K-4, along with ongoing monitoring of student progress.
• Maintain a database of ELL and ELL-eligible students.
• Assist in developing language acquisition support plans (ELL plans) for all ELL students and work with classroom teachers to implement plans.
• Assist in completing ELL Accommodations Forms and ELL Progress Reports for elementary school students.
• Work with classroom teachers to support differentiated instruction.
• Monitor and support classrooms from K-4th grade.
• Assist in developing appropriate curriculum to help ELL students acquire the English language.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group instruction for learning/small-group or individual learning.
• Assist in compiling and maintaining a profile summary (record of achievement and progress) for each student.
• Assist in gathering and reporting data for reporting requirements and other required reports (to the State, Dept of Education, census, grant applications, annual report, etc.).
• Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program.
• Engage parents and families in their student's learning and acting as an ambassador for the school in the community attending community/school events.
• Contribute productively to the school as a whole.
• Participate in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
• If needed, attend IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law.
• Attend and participate in established traditional school-sponsored activities (i.e., back-to school night, open house, and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or faculty members), which may be outside of regular school hours.
• Demonstrates an understanding of standards-based education and how it is implemented in the classroom;
• Participates in curriculum development programs as required;
• Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities;
• Facilitates ACCESS testing and the WIDA Screener, if designated to
• Performs such other duties as assigned by the principal and/or designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers' Contract. Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators. Applicants are not to approach members of the Newport School Committee.
