POSITION SUMMARY: Provides supervisory and administrative duties within an assigned division overseeing the functions and operations in accordance with all statues, laws, ordinances, and regulations for which the Police Department is accountable. Duties include, but are not limited to: supervising and training assigned personnel, conducting civil/criminal investigations, interviewing informants, witnesses, and suspects, maintaining surveillances, following leads and obtaining evidence, establishing facts and developing detailed reports of the information received, compiling reports, maintaining and updating records for proper documentation, and preparing cases and participating at hearings or testifying in court. This position reports to the Major of Safety and Security. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, manages employee concerns and problems, provides guidance as it relates to work performance, counseling, and monitoring, assists in completing employee performance appraisals. Delegates assignments to subordinates. Directs, expedites, and reviews assignments for accuracy and completeness; either personally or through subordinate supervisors. Prepares work assignments. Prepares for additional in-service training. Schedules and conducts staff meetings. Assists with the establishment of departmental goals for the staff. Instructs and directs staff on procedures and protocol of the department. Assigns tasks to staff and monitors performance. Provides technical assistance as needed. Reviews documents processed by staff members to ensure adherence to standards; discusses errors that may arise and recommends method(s) for corrective action. Inspects personnel for compliance to guidelines, uniform, etc. Attends meetings and assists with BOE activities. Collaborates with other agencies, citizen groups, the business community, and the general public by exchanging information and providing technical assistance when necessary. KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Business, Public Administration, or closely related field required. Minimum of five (5) years of successful law enforcement experience with two (2) years of continuous service as a Police Sergeant or higher required. Upper management supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of the School Resource Officer (SRO) and Campus Security Officer (CSO) roles, as well as a corresponding working knowledge of the K-12 educational climate and culture. Makes decisions and recommendations which routinely affect the activities of others. Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) certification in good standing required. Valid Driver's License required. High level of judgment required: Supervisor is available on a limited time basis; individual required to establish and evaluate departmental and organizational objectives; independent judgment is required to review and approve major recommendations. Requires regular, frequent contact with internal and external personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance. Requires the ability to speak and signal to people to convey or exchange professional information. Requires the ability to read a variety of professional, technical, and administrative documents, directions, instructions, methods, and procedures related to police work and law enforcement. Mid-level supervision; Immediate supervisor for Sergeants. Possess the ability to administer policies, procedures, plans and activities and monitor the performance of subordinates against measured established standards. Possess the knowledge to administer operations plans; oversee objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the department. Possess the skills to implement long-term goals for the department in order to promote effectiveness and efficiency. Applies, recommends, and implements technology concepts to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the District. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Constant (Daily) - to exercise the duty of care and protection of the health, safety, security, welfare, well-being, and best interests of the district's various stakeholders. Requires extensive safety training, conflict resolution, escalation concepts, and/or protective devices. May occasionally come in contact with individuals with criminal or malicious intent. Must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related machines, equipment, vehicles, weapons, etc. Heavy exertion of force, lifting, or carrying; fifty (50) lbs. frequently, one-hundred (100) lbs. occasionally. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work. NOTE: This is a grade 27, 240 day position that pays for experience up to a Step 8.
