CITY OF STAUNTON Equipment Maintenance Technician (Mechanic)-III The City of Staunton's Public Works Department is seeking an Equipment Maintenance Technician (Mechanic)-III to join its team in the Equipment Maintenance Division. As our Equipment Maintenance Technician, you will perform high-level mechanical work under regular supervision to keep our fleet and public works equipment moving. What You'll Do You will be responsible for the diagnostic troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and skilled repair of a diverse array of vehicles and power equipment. Your daily tasks will include:

• Advanced Diagnostics & Repair: Tune motors using standard testing equipment, and use computer scan tools and laptop software to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic defects.

• Overhauls & Maintenance: Repair and overhaul brakes (including drum, disk, "S-Cam," and air brake systems), transmissions, ignition/fuel systems, differentials, and axle assemblies. Change tires/balancing.

• Electrical & Welding: Perform diversified automotive electrical work and execute major welding and fabrication repairs on various equipment.

• Specialized Equipment Support: Service, take down, and reassemble air compressors, pumps, leaf vacuums, wood chippers, and snow removal equipment.

• Inspections & Safety: Perform official state vehicle inspections and strictly follow all OSHA and Public Works environmental safety guidelines.

• Team Leadership & Tech: Help supervise shop employees, accurately log your work orders into our computer system, and assist with seasonal snow removal operations.

What You Bring (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)

• Expertise: Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and shop equipment (drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, welding gear) used to fix light and heavy vehicles.

• Diagnostic Intuition: A sharp eye for detecting worn or broken parts and the resourcefulness to adapt tools and parts to solve specific repair problems.

• Technical Literacy: The ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, technical installation manuals, and repair charts.

• Soft Skills: Effective customer relations skills, clear communication, and the ability to maintain accurate repair records.

Requirements & Qualifications To hit the ground running, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Experience & Education: High school diploma (or equivalent) combined with 5 years of hands-on experience AND/OR graduation from a recognized technical institute.

• Commercial Driver's License (CDL):

• Must possess a valid Virginia Class "B" CDL with N, P, S, and Air Brake endorsements, no restrictions, and a clean driving record.

• Must be able to take a driving test and successfully upgrade to a Class "A" CDL within 6 months of employment.

• Certifications & Licenses:

• Valid Virginia Class "A" State emission inspector/mechanic license (covering light duty, heavy duty, and EPA when required).

• Current Automotive Air Conditioning Certification Certificate.

• Must possess or be willing to obtain a Class A and B operator certificate through the online Tennessee tank school.
