About this role
The Care Assistant plays a key role in supporting adults with intellectual disabilities to live meaningful, fulfilling lives within a warm and inclusive home environment. Working as part of the house team, the Care Assistant provides person-centred support, contributes to the daily life of the house, and fosters positive relationships with Core Members, colleagues, and volunteers. The role involves practical care, emotional support, participation in community life, and collaboration with the House/Team Leader and wider team to ensure high-quality support in line with L’Arche values. Reporting to: House leader / Team Leader / Deputy Team Leader In Relation to the Core Members Build respectful, trusting, and supportive relationships with each Core Member. Support Core Members in their daily living activities (personal care, meals, household tasks, etc.) while promoting independence. Encourage and support Core Members to make choices and take responsibility in their own lives. Uphold the dignity, self-esteem, and individuality of each person. Follow care plans and Person-Centred Plans (PCPs) in line with HIQA standards. Support Core Members in communication, ensuring their voice is heard and respected. Assist with social, recreational, and community activities in line with Core Members’ interests. Support Core Members to attend appointments (medical, social, etc.) as required. Assist in maintaining accurate and confidential records. Support safe medication practices as directed and trained. Promote a safe, clean, and healthy living environment. In Relation to the Staff Team Work collaboratively as part of the house team, supporting a positive and respectful team culture. Follow guidance from the House/Team Leader and contribute to the smooth running of the house. Participate in team meetings, training, and reflective practice. Communicate effectively with colleagues regarding Core Members’ needs and daily updates. Support new staff and volunteers through welcoming and sharing knowledge of daily routines. Contribute to a supportive and cooperative team environment. Attend support and supervision sessions In Relation to Volunteer Assistants Welcome and include Volunteer Assistants as part of the team. Support volunteers in understanding their role and the daily life of the house. Work alongside volunteers to ensure consistent and supportive care for Core Members. Promote a culture of inclusion, learning, and shared responsibility. In Relation to the House / Community Actively participate in the daily life and routines of the house. Support meal preparation, cleaning, and general household tasks. Contribute to creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive home environment. Support celebrations, events, and community gatherings. Encourage Core Members’ participation in the wider community. Maintain awareness of health and safety procedures and follow all policies.
