An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and innovative senior nurse to join Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust as Emergency Department Matron. The post holder will provide visible clinical and operational leadership across the Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care.
Working as a key member of the Emergency Care leadership team, you will lead on patient safety, quality, workforce development, patient flow, governance and service improvement, whilst supporting staff to deliver excellent outcomes for patients and families.

Main duties of the job
The Emergency Department Matron will provide visible clinical and operational leadership across the Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality care and an excellent patient experience.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading patient safety, quality, governance, safeguarding and workforce agendas across Emergency Care. Providing professional leadership to nursing and clinical support teams, promoting high standards of care and professional practice. Driving patient flow, capacity management and escalation processes to support delivery of urgent and emergency care performance standards. Ensuring safe staffing, workforce development, recruitment, retention and staff wellbeing. Leading quality improvement, service transformation and innovation initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and experience. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and partners to deliver effective, patient-centred emergency care services. Monitoring performance, managing risks and ensuring compliance with national standards, regulatory requirements and Trust objectives. Acting as a senior nursing leader and role model, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, inclusion and compassionate leadership.
About us
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades ensure the Trust now has state-of-the-art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. The Emergency Department Matron is responsible for providing visible clinical, professional and operational leadership across the Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, compassionate and effective care. The post holder will lead nursing and clinical support teams to achieve excellence in patient safety, patient experience, workforce performance and service delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
Providing senior nursing leadership and professional oversight for Emergency and Paediatric Emergency Care services. Leading quality, safety, governance, safeguarding, infection prevention and medicines management agendas to ensure compliance with national standards and regulatory requirements. Promoting and maintaining high standards of patient care, clinical practice and patient experience through visible and compassionate leadership. Leading patient flow, capacity management and escalation processes to support effective emergency care pathways and delivery of performance standards. Ensuring safe staffing levels, workforce planning, recruitment, retention, staff wellbeing and professional development across the Emergency Department. Managing and responding to clinical and operational risks, incidents, complaints and patient safety concerns, ensuring learning is embedded and improvements are sustained. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, senior clinicians, operational leaders and external partners to improve patient outcomes and service effectiveness. Leading quality improvement, transformation and innovation programmes that support continuous improvement in patient care, workforce effectiveness and operational performance. Monitoring and delivering quality, workforce and operational performance metrics, providing assurance to divisional and corporate governance structures. Acting as a role model for Trust values and fostering an inclusive, positive culture that supports excellence, continuous learning and compassionate care. The post holder will be a key member of the Emergency Care leadership team, contributing to the strategic development of urgent and emergency care services and ensuring patients receive safe, responsive and patient-centred care at all times.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse with current NMC registration Educated to Master's level or equivalent experience Management/Leadership qualification or equivalent senior leadership experience.
Desirable
Experience across both adult and paediatric emergency care services. Quality Improvement qualification (Lean, QI, Improvement Science)
Experience Essential
Significant senior nursing leadership experience within Emergency Care at Band 7 or above. Experience of leading service improvement and transformational change. Experience of managing patient flow, capacity escalation and operational pressur Experience of workforce management, including recruitment, performance management and staff development. Experience of leading quality, safety and governance programmes. Experience of investigating incidents, complaints and patient safety concerns. Experience of managing budgets and resources
Knowledge Essential
Advanced knowledge of national urgent and emergency care standards and priorities. Advanced understanding of patient safety, governance and risk management. Understanding of workforce planning and safe staffing. Ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams and influence change

Experience of CQC inspections and regulatory compliance.
