Job summary
University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) invites applications for full-time, permanent Specialty Doctor posts in Emergency Medicine, working across Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The successful candidate will be a Senior Decision Maker (SDM) within the Emergency Department, responsible for complex clinical decisions, supervision of junior staff, and leading the department during night shifts when no consultant is present.
This is a 10 PA post: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).The Trust can provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for Tier 2 visa applicants, and overseas EM experience will be recognised when determining the starting point on the Specialty Doctor pay scale.
UHD has a strong history of supporting doctors through CESR, with many progressing to substantive consultant roles. Successful applicants may join a structured CESR programme, which includes tailored development plans, rotations in key acute specialties (Critical Care, Anaesthetics, Acute Medicine, Paediatrics), and mentorship from CESR-qualified consultants. Participation is optional for candidates choosing to pursue training routes instead.
Following the merger of Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch Hospitals, UHD now operates Emergency Departments on both main sites.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Care & Patient ManagementProvide timely assessment, diagnosis, treatment, resuscitation and stabilisation of emergency patients, including performing essential ED procedures and making safe admission, referral or discharge decisions.
Leadership, Supervision & Multidisciplinary Working
Support and supervise junior doctors, students and wider clinical staff, while working collaboratively with consultants and specialty teams to ensure safe, effective patient care.
Education, Governance & Professional Development
Contribute to teaching and training, clinical audit, quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, policy development and morbidity and mortality reviews, while maintaining ongoing CPD and mandatory training.
Rota & Departmental Responsibilities
Participate in the Tier 4 rota, providing 24/7 emergency care across early, late and night shifts, and work as part of the Middle Grade ED team across RBH and Poole.

Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA's will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.
This role is eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses, in accordance with the Trust's applicable policies and guidelines.

Person Specification
Experience Essential
At least 4 years of postgraduate training, including relevant posts in Emergency Medicine A minimum of 2 years of recent experience working in an Emergency Department IAC completed/ significant anaesthetic experience Intensive care experience (4-6 months minimum) Demonstrated successful completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent. Involvement in audit and teaching activities. Competence in independently managing minor injuries. Significant experience in Emergency Medicine, equivalent to ST4+ level (not ST3 or below) Full MRCEM Qualification parts 1,2 and 3
Desirable
ATLS, APLS, or ALS instructor status Participation in research or simulation activities
Qualifications and Training Essential
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. MBBS or an equivalent medical degree A minimum of two life support courses, up to date (ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, APLS/EPLS). Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM).
Desirable
Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM Level 1 Ultrasound (USS) competency. All 3 life support courses, up to date (ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, APLS/EPLS).
