About this role

Job summary

Working within the NLaG Estates dept predominantly across Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital (DPOW), Scunthorpe General Hospital (SGH) and Goole & District Hospital (GDH) you will be part of the team undertaking statutory inspections of the fire doors and where appropriate approved repairs to certified standards.

This plays a vital role in keeping our patients, staff and visitors safe should a fire occur to prevent fire spreading and potentially causing a catastrophic incident.

Liaising with the Capital Projects Team and the Fire & Safety Compliance Officers within the Group to ensure that the integrity of our fire doors is maintained within our passive fire protection and fire safety management.

A degree of 'out of normal hours' working time flexibility will be required in times of occasional need and you may occasionally work at other sites within the Group.

Job Summary

A Fire Door Inspection & Repair Operative is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement of fire doors across NHS facilities. The role ensures compliance with statutory fire-safety legislation and Healthcare Technical Memoranda (HTMs), supporting the Trust's Fire Safety team to maintain safe, compliant buildings.

Full UK Driving Licence is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

Fire Door Inspection & Compliance

o Assess the condition of fire doors in compliance with HTMs and relevant fire-safety regulations.

o Conduct reactive and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to extend life expectancy of fire doors.

o Ensure fire doors meet Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Fire Safety Act 2021, and NHS Estates guidance.

o Record defects, follow-up works, and maintain accurate inspection documentation.

Repair & Maintenance Duties

o Working either individually or as part of a team where management and technicians work close together to solve problems.

o Complete repairs including replacing components, adjusting self-closing mechanisms, fixing seals, ironmongery, glazing, and frames.

o Respond to urgent repair requests and make areas safe until full repairs can be carried out.

o Carry out fire-door remedial works ensuring proper compartmentation performance.

Safety, Documentation & Communication

o Maintain thorough records, including digital reporting systems.

o Communicate effectively with internal estates teams, Fire Safety Officers, and external contractors.

o Follow safe-system-of-work policies and Trust health & safety requirements.

o Ability to interpret and adhere to the manufacturer's specifications, ensuring that compliance is always at the forefront of all works.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications Essential

oNVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds in Carpentry/Joinery or equivalent trade qualification. oFormal training or demonstrable experience in fire-door inspection, installation, or maintenance. o Fire-door inspection qualification (e.g., FDIS, BM TRADA, IFC). oGood standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSE English & Maths or equivalent).

Desirable

oTraining in fire-safety legislation or passive fire protection. o Health & Safety training (e.g., IOSH Working Safely).

Occupational Experience Essential

oExperience carrying out fire-door repairs, adjustments, and maintenance. o Experience undertaking inspections or surveys of fire doors. o Proven knowledge in understanding of fire-safety legislation and guidance (Fire Safety Order, Fire Safety Act, HTMs)

Desirable

oExperience working in hospital, healthcare, or safety-critical environments.
