About this role

SECONDARY DIVISION

The Middle and Upper Grades are where our ambitious goals for Avenues graduates, defined in our mission statement, are most comprehensively realized. While in grades 6-12, we prepare students for a globally connected, innovation-driven, and largely unknown future. Our students will be: accomplished in all the academic skills you would expect, at ease beyond their borders, and confident because they excel in a particular passion.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Mathematics Teaching Fellows Program at Avenues São Paulo is a two-year professional formation program designed for emerging math educators with foundational teaching experience who are seeking to deepen their instructional practice within a highly collaborative and intellectually rigorous environment.

Through mentorship, co-teaching, observation, instructional coaching, and gradually increasing teaching responsibilities, fellows develop the knowledge, habits, and pedagogical skills necessary to become outstanding mathematics teachers. Fellows work closely with experienced faculty and engage deeply with Avenues’ problem-based approach to mathematics instruction.

Throughout the fellowship, participants have opportunities to:

Co-teach and collaborate closely with experienced mathematics faculty

Observe and analyze strong instructional practices across grade levels

Gradually assume increasing responsibility for planning and leading instruction

Engage in ongoing feedback, reflection, and instructional coaching

Contribute to a collaborative teaching culture centered on student learning

In this role, you will also:

Support student learning through responsive and thoughtful instruction

Help cultivate a rigorous, joyful, and inclusive classroom environment

Collaborate intensively with colleagues to deepen student learning

Build positive and professional relationships with students and families

Demonstrate openness to feedback and commitment to continuous growth

Successful fellows will leave the program well prepared for future lead teaching opportunities within rigorous, student-centered schools, including potential full-time teaching opportunities at Avenues.

Mathematics in grades 8–12 is taught through constructivist practices centered on student discussion, collaboration, and problem solving. Students present their thinking, reflect on mistakes, and build conceptual understanding through mathematical discourse and inquiry. Teachers facilitate these discussions to guide students toward increasingly sophisticated understanding.
