Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, registered band 5 nurse with a passion for caring for oncology patients to join our dedicated team in the brand-new Christie at Macclesfield for 12 months fixed term contract.

We are a caring, well-led unit with a good staff to patient ratio. We are a day case unit offering treatments to all specialties.

The Role and Team

On appointment you would receive a comprehensive supernumerary training package, in which you have exposure to different anti-cancer treatments in different disease group fields and complete the UKONs SACT passport.

You will gain experience in treating a variety of patients with potentially curative diseases, alongside palliative and clinical trial treatments. During your supernumerary period, you will complete most of your training at main Christie hospital Oak Road Treatment Centre.

We are an innovative and forward-thinking unit dedicated to reviewing and developing the ways that we work for our patients' needs. We are welcoming to new ideas and would look forward to working with nurses who have a genuine passion for caring for patients in this field.

We are open Monday-Friday 9-5pm. We also open on Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job

To safely administer SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) to Christie patients attending the unit.

To provide care for chemotherapy patients and their carers within a recognised framework in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Christie NHS Trust policies and Health & Safety legislation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide a supportive role within the SACT unit at the Christie at Macclesfield for nursing, medical and clerical Staff.2. Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs3. To give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions4. To participate in the rehabilitation of patients and give any necessary instructions, including discharge information5. Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the department6. Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff/Health Care Assistants acting as mentor to designated staff7. To welcome patients to the unit and its routine8. Be able to act as ward co-ordinator and ensure the safe and timely management of patients9. To liaise with medical and non medical personnel and community organisations10. Rotate to ground floor clinic management where required so support in outpatients.11. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects12. To act as support for other nurses in relation to SACT and oncology care13. Safely deliver SACT to Christie patients attending the unit14. Assist in the provision of meals / refreshments for patients whilst meeting their nutritional needs15. Assist in the general housekeeping duties of the unit.16. Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks etc to the nurse in charge17. Liaise with nurse responsible for stores/stationery and ordering and assist in the maintenance of stock levels18. Handles patients personal possessions, ensure cash and valuables kept securely19. Correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines and the return of any unused chemotherapy to pharmacy20. Assist medical staff with procedures21. Demonstrates the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviourEDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT1. The staff nurse is responsible for their own personal development and maintaining a personal development plan2. To complete the Ward introductory pack and preceptor pack3. Complete Clinical Skills Training and the UKONs SACT passport4. Annually attend all mandatory study days including Resuscitation, AIMs, moving & handling and fire safety5. To complete level 3 SACT administration programme to administer cytotoxic drugs and educate patients regarding their treatment6. To be working towards band 6 equivalent competency packPERSONAL1. Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours4. Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

First level registration (RGN/RN Adult) Degree in Healthcare studies (or equivalent)

Desirable

Post Registration Oncology qualifications Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
