About this role

Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and skilled midwife to join the Antenatal and Newborn screening team at Barnet Hospital. It is essential that the post holder has confidence and experience in using IT systems and knowledge of the antenatal and newborn screening programmes. The post holder will also be required to cross-cover for the screening team specialist midwives in their absences.

The post holder must ensure a high quality antenatal and newborn screening service is provided for women and families within the resources available by developing, reviewing and implementing programmes in line with national evidence/ recommendations on all areas covered by RFL.

This role is a part time job share, Fridays, 9am-5pm with no on-call commitments.

Main duties of the job

Provide and support antenatal screening at a service-based level within the maternity service.

To act as a Specialist Midwife in the field of antenatal and newborn screening and diagnosis.

To provide advice and assistance for health care professionals in the care of clients undergoing screening.

Have direct responsibility for overseeing the programme at local level and counselling women and their families concerning high risk results.

Provide professional clinical leadership supporting the delivery of evidenced based woman centred care in relation to antenatal and newborn screening.

Have the ability to influence decision making within the maternity service, at Trust level and with wider health care organisations who are involved in the screening process.

To work as a practising midwife within the maternity unit and provide cover for the antenatal and newborn screening team specialist midwives in their absence.

Person Specification

Education & professional Qualifications Essential

Registered Midwife with current NMC registration First Degree or working towards in relevant subject Evidence of continuing professional development Mentorship Qualification

Desirable

NIPE trained or willingness to undertake NIPE course

Experience Essential

Post registration experience in all aspects of Midwifery Care Evidence of clinical competence Experience in the screening service Experience in developing and implementing guidelines Experience of data collection and analysis Solid experience in using IT systems (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel) Evidence of teaching and developing junior staff

Skills and aptitudes Essential

Good communication skills Good leadership skills Good counselling and listening skills Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative Understanding of current issues in antenatal and newborn screening e.g. Failsafe systems, national standards Understanding and knowledge of key performance indicators in screening Demonstrates skills in IT systems and use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint Ability to work as part of a team Knowledge of change management Excellent presentation skills Ability to produce high standards of documentation
