Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultation to join our Orthodontic department.
If successful you will be working in the outpatient clinic, undertaking specialist orthodontic treatment for patients who attend our department with complex orthodontic problemsThis role consists of six four-hour Programmed Activity (PA's) each week, split across Southend & Broomfield Hospitals. Your Programmed Activity will consist of clinical sessions and administrative work related to the patients being treated.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will work in the Orthodontic Departments of both hospitals, undertaking specialist orthodontic treatment, new patient clinics, review clinics and Orthognathic hypodontia MDTs. The appointee will assist the other consultant orthodontists to run and develop the Orthodontic Department in its present and future service provision.
The post will be split between Southend and Broomfield Hospitals, but the appointee will be an employee of Southend University Hospital and appraisal and other aspects of the management of the employment will be led by Southend University Hospital.

At Broomfield Hospital the appointee will be responsible for running the clinical service with their Orthodontic consultant colleague, which will include liaising with colleagues and managers to ensure the smooth running of the service. They will be jointly responsible for day-to-day clinical governance issues in this department. It is expected that the appointee will develop this service to improve the service to local patients and primary care providers. The appointee will be accountable to the Orthodontic Clinical Lead (currently Mr Spencer Nute) and the Divisional managers at Southend University Hospital and Broomfield Hospital.
Attending promptly to administrative matters and correspondence relating to any or all the above, including data collection and audit. This will involve frequently liaising effectively with colleagues in secondary care as well as referring primary care general and specialist practitioner colleagues. The departments prides themselves on good relationships with local primary care providers and the successful applicant is expected to uphold the values and protocols we follow. Working across both hospitals will ensure that the appointee has mentorship from 3 experienced consultant orthodontist colleagues plus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery consultant colleagues and will therefore understand the level of service that we expect to provide.
Supervision and teaching of the specialty registrars in conjunction with the other consultant orthodontists. Specialty training is a major part of our departments remit, and we have an excellent reputation for the quality of our clinical training. Our unit is highly regarded by the East of England Training Programme Director and the dental teaching hospital our specialty trainees link to at Barts and The London NHS Trust. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively and fully in all aspects of our departments clinical specialty training and specialty trainee clinical supervision. This includes being a named Clinical Supervisor for all the trainees and potentially becoming Educational Supervisor for one or more trainees in time.

Research / Audit Experience Essential
Active participation in audit projects either in the hospital setting including developing and leading projects.
Experience & Knowledge Essential
Successful completion of 3 years full-time orthodontic specialty training (or the equivalent Less Than Full Time specialty training) leading to the attainment of a CCST in Orthodontics. Successful completion of 2 further years of full-time Post-CCST hospital-based training in an approved post (or the equivalent Less Than Full Time Training period) leading to the ISFE in Orthodontics Post-graduation experience in various dental specialties and settings before specialising in orthodontics. Experience in treating patients with complex and multi-disciplinary orthodontic problems as part of a recognised orthodontic training programme.

Registration / Qualifiations Essential
Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC). Registration on the United Kingdom GDC Orthodontic specialist register. Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or equivalent. Membership in Orthodontics of one of the UK Royal College of Surgeons, or equivalent. Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Orthodontics

Teaching Experience Essential
Experience of clinical and theoretical teaching of postgraduate orthodontic trainees.
