About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Integrated Community Neurology Team.

The successful individual will be based in Gorleston and work around the Great Yarmouth & Waveney area. They will join an enthusiastic and supportive multi-disciplinary neurology team in providing high quality care and rehabilitation.

We are looking for someone with experience in supporting people with progressive neurological conditions. We have a strong commitment to clinical supervision and Continuing Professional Development (CPD), offering a supportive and proactive environment with opportunities for supervision, training and peer support. We work closely with Stroke Early Supported discharge and primary care home colleagues.

Main duties of the job

As an Occupational Therapist working across a variety of clinical areas you will be committed to promoting recovery and well-being, whilst empowering service users to self-manage and maximise their independence using health coaching techniques and meaning activity centred around an individual's goals.Working autonomously at a level that is appropriate to clinical competencies and within scope of professional practice which combines a level of assessment, intervention and on-going referrals.To provide training sessions for staff, families and carers as well as external agencies as required.To work with members of the multidisciplinary team to provide proactive and reactive services.Contribute to the continuous evaluation of the service to ensure it is fit for purpose and increases choice through audit and research.

The neurology team consists of specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and assistant practitioners.

Clinical

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support assistants to do likewise.To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.To undertake the detailed assessment of patients, some of whom may have complex needs, using investigative and analytical skills.To collaboratively work with patients to develop rehabilitation goals.To formulate an individualised treatment plan, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of skills and treatment options.To develop specialised skills in relation to cognition, perception, and upper limb therapy.To provide advice to the MDT regarding the management of patients requiring therapy input.To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, schools, workplace and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of Occupational Therapy to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of their neurological condition. Communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and gaining informed consent will be used with a wide variety of patients. Barriers to effective communication may include loss of hearing, cognitive difficulties, expressive and receptive aphasia, pain and fear.To assess capacity, gain valid consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.To help facilitate patients to self-manage their rehabilitation.To take responsibility for appropriate delegation of tasks.To train, supervise and manage performance of assistant practitioners, therapy assistants and students, with assistance from more senior members of the team. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.To maintain up-to-date knowledge of the full neurological care pathway.Professional

To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends and developments and incorporate them as necessary into your work.To be an active member of the in-service training programme by the attendance and presentation at staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions, external courses and reflective practice.To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service. This will include case conference and medical reports. To provide teaching/training to other members of the multidisciplinary team.To participate in the staff appraisal scheme and personal development.To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of Evidence Based Practice projects, audit and outcome measures. Qualifications Essential

Diploma/Degree or equivalent in Occupational TherapyHCPC registrationEvidence of relevant post graduate courses/CPD in neurology or rehabilitation
